College Hockey Power Rankings: Teams Gear Up For Final Push ...

FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.

FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season. 

1. Boston College 24-6-1 (Previous Ranking: 1)

Boston College remains on top as the Eagles are 12-3-0 since the Christmas break and remain atop the Hockey East standings with 47 points – five ahead of Maine. The Eagles scored 10 goals last weekend against Vermont and Ryan Leonard (WSH) scored in both games, giving the sophomore a four-game goal streak. BC has won three straight and finishes the season with a home-and-home against New Hampshire and its regular-season finale against Merrimack.

2. Minnesota 23-7-4 (PR: 4)

The Gophers earned a massive sweep last weekend against Ohio State, highlighted by Brody Lamb’s (NYR) four-point series. The sweep vaulted Minnesota to the top of the Big Ten standings and the Gophers control their destiny this weekend at Penn State, as they’ll try to clinch their seventh all-time Big Ten regular-season title.

3. Western Michigan 23-6-1 (PR: 3)

The Broncos swept Omaha on home ice and split a series at Arizona State last weekend, taking the finale in overtime – 4-3. The Friday loss was WMU’s first regulation loss of the season in NCHC play. However, the Broncos remain atop the NCHC standings with 47 points and could clinch their first conference title in program history this weekend. Freshman forward Zach Nehring (WPG) has six points (3-3-6) over his past three games.

4. Michigan State 22-6-4 (PR: 2)

Michigan State earned just one point against red-hot Penn State last weekend via a shootout loss (tie). The Spartans are 1-2-1 over their last four and 4-4-2 over their last 10, and they’ve dipped behind Minnesota in the standings as a result. Maxim Strbak (BUF) scored his second goal of the season while Trey Augustine made 52 of a possible 57 saves against Penn State.

5. Maine 19-6-5 (PR: 5)

Maine fell to UConn in overtime last time out but still owns an eight-game point streak (4-1-3), including ranked wins over Providence and UMass. The Black Bears are currently fourth in the Pairwise and second in the Hockey East standings, and they’ve got two series left – Vermont and at UMass. Albin Boija remains one of the nation’s top goaltenders and ranks second in GAA (1.64) and seventh in save percentage (.931).

6. Denver 23-8-1 (PR: 6)

The Pioneers lit the lamp 10 times in a road sweep of Miami. Carter King led the way offensively with a pair of goals and the Pioneers have scored at least five goals in five of their past seven games. Jack Devine and Aidan Thompson also had four points each (1-3-4) in Oxford and Zeev Buium netted his seventh of the season. Denver is currently fifth in the NCHC standings with 36 points and will try to earn home ice over the final two weeks.

7. Boston University 18-12-2 (PR: 7)

BU is off this weekend and has just two regular-season games left. The Terriers split their last two series and skated to a 2-2 tie at UConn Tuesday night, earning an extra point in the shootout. Cole Hutson (WSH) and Sascha Boumedienne scored in regulation, Mikhail Yegorov made another 25 saves, and Cole Eiserman (NYI) and Quinn Hutson secured the extra point with shootout goals. BU is seventh in the Pairwise and will host Providence on March 6 for its Senior Night.

8. Providence 18-8-5 (PR: 8)

Speaking of Providence, the Friars are sixth in the Pairwise and have earned points in seven of their past nine, going 3-3-3 in the stretch. Providence beat UMass Lowell last Saturday, 4-2, and earned an impressive win over BU the week before. Trevor Connelly (VGK) scored his fourth goal of the season in the win. As mentioned above, the Terriers and Friars will meet again next week, and Providence has a home-and-home against Merrimack in between.

9. UCONN 17-10-3 (PR: 11)

UConn is 3-0-1 over its last four and defeated a pair of ranked teams – Maine and UMass Lowell – and forced a shootout with another in BU. The Huskies have held their opponents to two goals or less in three straight games and are allowing 2.6 goals per game on the season. UConn also continues to find success on home ice, as Mike Cavanaugh’s club at 10-4-1 at Toscano Family Ice Forum, and their 31 points are good for fourth in the Hockey East standings.

10. Ohio State 20-10-2 (PR: 9)

Ohio State was swept at Minnesota last weekend but had won four straight and earned points in seven of its previous eight heading into the series. Captain Davis Burnside netted his 12th of the season in the series and has scored in four of his past six games. OSU has clinched home ice for the first round of the Big Ten playoffs and is currently third with 40 points, just four behind second-place Michigan State. They’ll host rival Michigan this weekend.

11. Minnesota State 22-8-2 (PR: 12)

The Mavericks clinched their ninth MacNaughton Cup last weekend at Lake Superior State as Minnesota State sits atop the CCHA standings with 52 points and a .722 win percentage. MSU out-scored LSSU 8-1 in the series and Alex Tracy continued his tremendous season, making 63 saves on 64 shots. Tracy’s .944 save percentage ranks second among NCAA goalies and Josh Groll also had a big weekend with five points (3-2-5). MSU is 17th in the Pairwise and hosts Bemidji State to wrap up the regular season.

12. Arizona State 18-12-2 (PR: 10)

Arizona State earned four points against Western Michigan and kept its Penrose hopes alive for at least one more week. Ty Jackson and Cullen Potter each had two-goal games as ASU earned a 5-3 win and 4-3 loss (OT). The Sun Devils are the only NCHC team to hand WMU a regulation loss this season. ASU is currently second in the NCHC with 44 points, just three behind WMU. However, the Broncos have played two fewer games. ASU is 16th in the Pairwise and heads to Omaha.

13. Michigan 17-12-3 (PR: 13)

Michigan was idle last weekend after a strong showing against Minnesota on Valentine’s weekend. Michael Hage (MTL) and TJ Hughes led the way with a goal each as Michigan skated to a 3-2 win (OT) and 2-2 tie, earning the extra point in a shootout. Hughes extended his point streak to 15 games in the process. The Wolverines hold a one-point lead over Penn State for fourth in the Big Ten and the two will likely meet to open the playoffs, although home ice is still up for grabs. Michigan heads to Ohio State while Penn State hosts Minnesota this weekend.

14. Quinnipiac 21-9-2 (PR: 15)

Quinnipiac is one of seven NCAA teams with more than 20 wins and has won four straight. The Bobcats have won seven of their last eight, are 15-3-2 over its past 20 and have scored 21 times during their four-game streak. Their next matchup will be a massive one on Friday as Quinnipiac heads to Clarkson. Quinnipiac holds a four-point edge over Clarkson atop the ECAC standings and is targeting its fifth straight Cleary Cup. The Bobcats finish the regular season at St. Lawrence on Saturday.

15. Penn State 17-11-4 (PR: 16)

Penn State is 9-1-2 over its past 12, which includes a 7-1-2 mark in Big Ten action. The Nittany Lions earned five points at Michigan State last weekend and have surged to No. 15 in the Pairwise. Reese Laubach (SJS) has five goals over his past six games and Aiden Fink (NSH) has been tremendous. The sophomore forward scored the game-winner last Saturday and has 23 goals – which ranks second in the NCAA – and 45 points through 32 games.

16. UMass 17-12-3 (PR: NR)

The Minutemen are up to No. 12 in the Pairwise and are 7-2-1 over their past 10. That stretch includes wins over Boston College and UConn as well, and UMass is coming off a four-point weekend against New Hampshire. Cole O’Hara had three points (1-2-3) in the series while goaltender Michael Hrabal (UTH) recorded 63 saves and a .940 save percentage. UMass closes out the final two weeks against UMass Lowell and Maine.
