College Hockey Power Rankings: Eagles Fly On Top, BU And OSU...

FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.

FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.

1. Boston College 21-4-1 (Previous Ranking: 2)

The Eagles fell to rival BU in the Beanpot championship, which snapped BC’s nine-game win streak. However, the Eagles remain atop the Hockey East standings with 38 points. BC lit the lamp 38 times over its nine-game win streak and scored three or more goals in eight of the nine games. They also held their opponents to a goal or less in six of the nine. Ryan Leonard (WSH) and Teddy Stiga (NSH) were named Hockey East’s January Player and Rookie of the Month, and Leonard continues leading the country with 23 goals.

2. Michigan State 22-5-3 (PR: 1)

Michigan State had just two losses through its first 22 games. However, they’ve lost twice in the past two weeks. Michigan State split its series at Ohio State and did the same last weekend against Michigan. MSU dropped the opener in Columbus, 4-2, but responded with a 4-1 win in the finale. They followed a similar path against Michigan too, falling 2-1 in Game 1 and responding with a 6-1 win at Little Caesars Arena. Six different Spartans scored in the win and Trey Augustine (DET) earned his 15th win in his potential future home rink.

3. Western Michigan 20-5-1 (PR: 3)

Pat Ferschweiler’s club continues to fire on all cylinders and is 9-1-0 over its past 10. Western Michigan has allowed the NCAA’s fewest goals (45), is averaging 3.6 goals per game and its .936 team save percentage ranks second. The Broncos also own the nation’s top penalty kill (93.3%) – which has killed off 40 consecutive penalties – along with the sixth-best power play (27.3%). WMU has earned 40 of a possible 48 points in NCHC play and has a huge series against second-place Omaha this weekend. The Broncos are 11-1-1 on home ice this season.

4. Minnesota 21-6-3 (PR: 4)

Minnesota is currently second in the Big Ten standings with 38 points – five behind Michigan State and four ahead of Ohio State. Minnesota has played two fewer games than MSU too. The Gophers are 4-3-1 over their past eight conference matchups and finish the season at Michigan, against Ohio State and at Penn State. Bob Motzko’s team scored nine goals last weekend in a sweep of Wisconsin and received two each from Connor Kurth (TBL), Jimmy Snuggerud (STL) and Brodie Ziemer (BUF).

5. Maine 18-5-4 (PR: 6)

Maine has just one loss over its past nine (6-1-2) and is coming off a four-point weekend at No. 7 Providence. The Black Bears skated to a 3-3 tie in Game 1 – with Maine earning the extra point in a shootout – and a 1-0 overtime win on Saturday. Taylor Makar (COL) scored 2:15 into the extra frame and the senior forward has scored in five straight, including a pair of multi-goal efforts.

6. Denver 20-7-1 (PR: 5)

The Pioneers have struggled against Arizona State this year and split their series last weekend. ASU handed DU its first two losses of the season in late November and took nine of the 12 points in the season series. DU is 8-7-1 since that 12-0-0 start, but the Pioneers are 5-2-1 over their past eight NCHC contests. However, Denver would play its playoff series on the road if the season ended today. Denver hosts North Dakota this weekend – the team it trails by one point in the standings – and its final three series are at Miami, against SCSU and a home-and-home with Colorado College.

7. Boston University 15-10-1 (PR: 10)

The Terriers were swept by Boston College late last month, which remains BU’s only regulation losses in 2025. However, BU picked the perfect time to enact revenge with a 4-1 win in the Beanpot Championship Game. Cole Eiserman (NYI), Cole Hutson (WSH) and Brandon Svoboda (SJS) scored in the win and Mikhail Yegorov (NJD) made 43 saves. Yegorov remains one of the nation’s biggest stories, as the freshman owns a .951 save percentage through his first five NCAA games. BU is 7-3-0 over its past 10 and will try to keep its momentum going in  a home-and-home against Providence.

8. Providence 16-7-5 (PR: 7)

Providence is 1-4-3 over its past eight games and sits seventh in the Hockey East standings with 24 points. However, the Friars remain seventh in the PairWise thanks to the gauntlet that is Hockey East this season. Their last eight games have been against ranked opponents and five of the eight have been decided by a goal or less. The going doesn’t get any easier as they have the above-mentioned series looming against BU.

9. Ohio State 18-8-2 (PR: 13)

Ohio State is aiming for its seventh 20-win season since 2016 and the Buckeyes sit at 18 with six games left. Four of those six are on home ice, where OSU is 10-2-1 this season. OSU swept Notre Dame last weekend with a pair of 5-1 wins and is 3-1-0 over its past four. Five different Buckeyes scored in the finale and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine had two assists. Fontaine has a team-leading 29 points and his 13 goals are tied for the team lead. Saturday was also his eighth multi-point game of the season.

10. Arizona State 17-10-1 (PR: 11)

Arizona State has won 14 of its past 17 games – 15 of which have come in conference play – and the Sun Devils are tied with Omaha for second in the NCHC standings. ASU earned three points in Denver last weekend to clinch the season series, and the Sun Devils scored 10 goals. ASU’s 105 goals rank fourth in the country and Ryan Kirwan is tied for fifth individually with 19. ASU’s power play (28.7%) is also second in the country, trailing only Denver (32%).

11. UCONN 15-10-3 (PR: 8)

UConn defeated UMass Lowell to snap a brief three-game skid and followed it up with a 5-2 win over Alaska Anchorage. UConn is 8-2-2 since the calendar flip and sits fourth in the Hockey East standings with 28 points. Their next two games are against the teams they’re chasing too in Maine and BU, and both are on home ice. UConn is 9-4-0 at home this season and the Huskies have also scored an NCAA-leading nine short-handed goals.

12. Minnesota State 20-8-2 (PR: 12)

Minnesota State split four consecutive series in January. However, the Mavericks swept Augustana last weekend to create a bit of separation atop the standings, and the MacNaughton Cup appears to be MSU’s to lose. Alex Tracy won the showdown against Josh Kotai – who have been two of the nation’s best goaltenders – and made 53 of 55 possible saves in the series. MSU has allowed just 48 goals through 30 games – which is tied for the NCAA’s third-fewest – and owns the nation’s top team save percentage at .939.

13. Michigan 16-12-2 (PR: 14)

The Wolverines are 2-4-1 over their past seven but won in East Lansing last Friday. Michigan is currently fourth in the Big Ten – six points behind Ohio State and 10 behind Minnesota, and both have played two fewer games. However, Michigan could potentially close that gap this weekend as Minnesota comes to town. TJ Hughes carries a 13-game point streak into the series and has a team-leading 33 points, 21 (8-13-21) of which have come over the past 13 games.

14. UMass Lowell 14-10-3 (PR: 9)

UMass Lowell lost to UConn and Vermont last weekend and the River Hawks are 2-6-1 over their past nine, eight of which have come within Hockey East. They’ve allowed 16 goals over the past four games too after handing Providence a 1-0 loss on Jan. 25. UML remains fifth in the conference with 26 points but they’ll need to get back on track down the stretch. UML has seven regular-season games left.

15. Quinnipiac 17-9-2 (PR: 15)

Quinnipiac lost to Clarkson last Saturday, which snapped a three-game win streak. The Bobcats still own the nation’s third-best power play (28%), fifth-best penalty kill (88.3%) and second-best faceoff win percentage (.552), and they’re 9-3-1 since the Christmas break. Quinnipiac sits atop the ECAC standings with 34 points, but first and fifth-place are separated by just five points.

16. Penn State 14-11-3 (PR: NR)

Penn State finds itself in a 6-1-2 stretch and the Nittany Lions have quietly crept to 16th in the PairWise. They remain sixth in the Big Ten and are 5-10-3 in conference play, but they’ve been a dangerous team of late. PSU has 24 goals over its past six and its 96 goals are tied for ninth nationally. Charlie Cerrato has 13 (6-7-13) points over his past 10 games and Aiden Fink has 13 goals over his past 12. He’s one of four NCAA players with 20 or more goals this season.
