College Hockey Power Rankings: Top Seven Remain While Severa...
FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.
FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.
1. Michigan State 18-2-2 (Previous Ranking: 1)
Michigan State skated to a 2-2 tie last time out at Penn State, which snapped a six-game win streak. However, MSU’s 18 wins are tied for the NCAA lead and the Spartans have just one regulation loss – Dec. 6 at Wisconsin – since mid-October. Isaac Howard (TBL) remains red-hot and has a seven-game goal streak, scoring 11 times and adding four assists in that stretch. Howard has an NCAA-leading 18 goals and 33 points and MSU’s 76 goals are the nation’s third most.
2. Minnesota 18-4-2 (PR: 2)
The Gophers split their series at Ohio State last weekend, falling 5-1 and winning 6-1. Minnesota swept Mercyhurst to open the second half too and is 6-2-2 over its past 10, and Minnesota sits second in the Big Ten standings with 27 points, one behind Michigan State. Defenseman Mike Koster (TOR) scored twice in the win and Minnesota has an NCAA-leading 98 goals as a team – 13 ahead of Denver and 22 more than Sparty.
3. Boston College 13-4-1 (PR: 3)
The Eagles went over a month between games and lost to Merrimack in their first game out of the break. However, Boston College responded with a 4-1 win the next night and also beat Harvard at home this past Tuesday. BC is 9-1-0 on home ice this season – the lone loss coming to Merrimack – and continues to be led offensively by WJC heroes Teddy Stiga (NSH), Gabe Perreault (NYR) and Ryan Leonard (WSH).

4. Western Michigan 13-4-1 (PR: 4)
Western Michigan followed the GLI with a sweep of Alaska Anchorage but was idle last weekend. Owen Michaels continued his break-out season as the sophomore forward had a two-goal game against UAA, while freshman Zach Nehring (WPG) had three points. WMU will head to North Dakota this weekend for a massive series, as the two teams are currently tied atop the NCHC standings with Arizona State.
5. Providence 15-3-2 (PR: 5)
The Friars extended their win streak to eight with a 2-0 win at Brown on Jan. 7, and Providence has arguably its biggest series of the season on tap – a home-and-home with Boston College this weekend. Providence is just three points behind BC for third place and has played two fewer games. Logan Will and Hudson Malinoski scored in that win over Brown while Zachary Borgiel recorded a 29-save shutout.
6. Maine 15-4-2 (PR: 6)
Speaking of the Hockey East standings, Maine leads the way with 24 points and has won three straight. They’ve done it against a pair of ranked teams too, beating Denver and sweeping UMass Lowell. The Black Bears held DU and UML to one goal in each of the three wins and goals haven’t come easy against Maine. Its 3.5 goals scored per game ranks fourth in the country while its 1.7 goals allowed are the second-fewest. Sophomore Albin Boija was named to the Richter Award Watch List this week and owns the nation’s second-best GAA at 1.55.

7. Denver 17-5-0 (PR: 7)
Denver got David Carle back behind the bench and Zeev Buium (MIN) back on the ice last weekend and returned to NCHC play with a sweep of Miami. DU out-scored the RedHawks 10-3 in the series and was led by Jack Devine (2-1-3), Aidan Thompson (2-2-4) and Buium (1-3-4). DU was 3-5-0 over its previous eight but will try to carry that momentum into the second half. They’ll use this weekend to recover too before finishing with seven consecutive weeks of conference play.
8. Minnesota State 15-5-2 (PR: 9)
Minnesota State suffered a regulation loss at Northern Michigan last weekend, something the Mavericks last did on Nov. 1. The loss ended an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) and was the first time they’d allowed more than two goals since Nov. 8, which coincidentally started the streak. However, MSU bounced back with a 6-1 win – which included three points from captain Josh Groll – and still leads the CCHA with 31 points.
9. Ohio State 15-6-1 (PR: 14)
Ohio State surpassed its 2023-24 win total with a big dub, handing Minnesota a 5-1 loss in Columbus. Despite falling to the Gophers the next night, it’s been a tremendous stretch for OSU, as the Buckeyes swept Penn State and Notre Dame, and earned a win over rival Michigan at Wrigley Field. OSU is currently third in the Big Ten standings and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine continues to be one of the league’s top forwards with 24 points through 22 games.

10. UMass Lowell 12-6-2 (PR: 11)
The River Hawks have dropped two straight but went toe-to-toe with Maine, who many perceive to be among the nation’s top teams – especially defensively. And UML held the Black Bears at bay offensively too. The River Hawks won the Cactus Cup the previous week, beating Michigan Tech and Omaha in Palm Springs, Calif. and should get a win this Saturday against Stonehill. UML’s power play remains 14th in the country at 23.7%.
11. Michigan 13-8-1 (PR: 10)
Michigan is fourth in the Big Ten as the Wolverines are 7-5-0 in conference play, and they split their games at Notre Dame last weekend. Kienan Draper (DET) led Michigan to a 5-3 win in the opener with a pair of goals and despite scoring four times on Saturday, UM fell short in the finale. Michigan is 4-6-0 over its past 10 and two of the four wins required overtime.
12. Boston University 11-7-1 (PR: 15)
BU exploded for 13 goals last weekend as the Terriers swept Vermont, winning 6-1 and 7-4. BU has scored four or more goals in five straight and eight of its last nine, and the Terriers have out-scored their opponents 74-65 this season, including a dozen from Cole Eiserman (NYI). While the 74 goals are tied for the fifth-most in the country, BU’s 3.4 goals allowed are also the nation’s ninth-worst per-game average. Although it’s unclear how much action he’ll see, BU added goaltender Mikhail Yegorov (NJD) from the USHL’s Omaha Lancers earlier this week.
13. Arizona State 11-8-1 (PR: 16)
ASU fell to North Dakota in overtime last Saturday, which snapped an eight-game win streak. The loss had to be a heart-breaker, as the Sun Devils scored two third-period goals, only to see UND tie it in the final minute and win in overtime. However, it doesn’t take away from ASU’s impressive season and Greg Powers’ club remains tied atop the NCHC standings. ASU has scored three or more goals in nine straight and its 3.3 goals per game are tied for eighth nationally. Artem Shlaine (NJD) had a three-goal weekend against UND.
14. North Dakota 12-8-1 (PR: 13)
UND got that above-mentioned win over ASU to salvage a split, as the Fighting Hawks are 5-0-1 over their past six NCHC contests and 7-2-1 over their past 10 overall. They can take the conference lead with a strong showing against Western Michigan too, but there are certainly areas of their game that need to improve down the stretch. Yet they’ve shown the ability to claw back late in games and their young players continue to step up – Sacha Boisvert (CHI) being the OT hero last time out.
15. UConn 11-8-1 (PR: NR)
UConn has won three straight and the Huskies have been good on home ice this season, where they’re 7-2-0. UConn swept New Hampshire in a home-and-home last weekend after beating Harvard the week prior. The Huskies are 6-3-0 over their past nine, which also includes wins over Boston College and UMass Lowell. Their losses have all been by one goal against UML (1-0), BC (2-1, OT) and Wisconsin (4-3) too, and UConn is quietly tied for third in the Hockey East standings with two games looming at first-place Maine.

16. St. Cloud State 11-9-0 (PR: 12)
SCSU returned from the break with a non-conference win over St. Thomas on Dec. 29. However, NCHC play hasn’t been as kind, as the Huskies were swept in Duluth last weekend, at North Dakota before the break and are 2-6-0 over their past eight NCHC contests. The UMD weekend was especially surprising, as the Bulldogs came in at 6-11-1. But they handed SCSU its fourth shutout loss of the season. SCSU will welcome Arizona State to town this weekend.
