Iowa posted its updated roster Tuesday and there are some notable changes in Iowa City.

It's hard to overstate how much exciting college wrestling took place this past weekend. All seven conferences held their championships over the last few days and determined the majority of the qualifiers for the 2024 NCAA Championships that will take place in less than two weeks in Kansas City, Missouri.

All the usual caveats apply. Whether or not an upset occurred was determined strictly by rankings and results that look like upsets this week may not look like upsets by the end of the season or even by next week.

When a sport that is closer to the heart than others, such as NCAA wrestling, is in the offseason and removed from the limelight, it can often feel like time stands still.

Below is a partial list of NCAA D1 heavyweight wrestlers (184, 197, 285) who are returning and will contest for a varsity spot after an interval of at least one year.

A lot happened in Norman since the 2023 NCAA tournament - former head coach Lou Rosselli resigned, former North Dakota State head coach Roger Kish was selected as his successor, assistants Nick Heflin, Sam Hazewinkel and Mike Lightner left, new assistants Austin Marsden and Cam Sykora were brought in, seven wrestlers hit the transfer portal, and eight wrestlers transferred in. While a lot has happened, I still expect 70% of this year’s starting lineup to either be either back from last year’s lineup or coming off of a redshirt year in Norman.

Similar to last year, the 197-pound bracket has no clear favorite and no wrestler’s seed will likely mean much. Returning champion Gabe Dean enters as the nine-seed following a 20-3 season where he lost, 6-3, in the Big Ten finals to Nebraska’s Silas Allred. This weight is a tangled plate of spaghetti that should be the most chaotic bracket of the tournament.
