LIVE From Russia: Day 6 Junior Worlds Updates

Follow along here for the latest happenings from the 2021 Junior World Championships in Ufa, Russia. Day 6 is the final full day of competition and it features the final five wrestlers in the Greco-Roman competition, including Nic Bouzakis (60 kg). Dominic Damon (67 kg), Justus Scott (72 kg), Jonathon Fagen (82 kg), and Jr. freestyle World champ Braxton Amos (97 kg). 

The Greco team went 0-5 on the first day of completion and only Kodiak Stephens (87 kg) was pulled into the repechage. 

The competition begins at 1 a.m. Central with prelims and quarterfinals. Semifinals begin at 6:45 a.m. and medal matches begin at 8 a.m.

Repechage (87 kg): Maksat Sailau (KAZ) over Kodiak Stephens, 10-0

Stephens tried an underarm spin but Sailau countered the shot for two then hit a four-point throw out of bounds for four. Stephens was put down and thrown for another four. Sailau won, 10-0. 

Round of 32 (72 kg): Omer Dogan (TUR) over Justus Scott, 9-0

Scott was dinged with a passivity point then turned when Dogan was on top. Scott was hit with a caution and two then taken down. Dogan led 7-0 at the break.

Dogan scored a point on a step-out but the U.S. corner challenged the call since the match would end 8-0. A lost challenge made the score 9-0.

Round of 32 (67 kg): Muslim Imadaev (RUS) over Dominic Damon, 10-0

Imadaev powered through for a takedown for a 2-0 lead. Damon hit with passivity, giving Imadaev an opportunity on top. He scored a four-point throw followed by a two-point turn to apparently end the match, 9-0. The U.S. corner challenged the call and lost the challenge. Final score: 10-0. 

Round of 16 (82 kg): Mikhail Khacaturau (BLR) over Jonathon Fagen, 7-2

Fagen gets hit with passivity and goes down 1-0 then 5-0 after getting turned twice. 

Fagen gets on the board with a passivity point but can’t get a turn and is down 5-1. Khachaturau scored a two-point takedown on the edge but Fagen got one back with a step-out. Khachaturau won 7-2.

Round of 16 (60 kg): Nic Bouzakis over Miguel Loureiro Dos Santos (POR), 11-2

Bouzakis gave up the first takedown but scored a reversal and three turns for a 7-2 lead. Bouzakis scores a takedown and puts in a half for another two but came away with an 11-2 technical superiority. 

Round of 16 (97 kg): Braxton Amos over Yerzat Yerlanov (KAZ), 8-0

Amos hit a headlock for four then picked up an additional point later in the match for passivity to take a 5-0 lead into the break.

Amos picked up to more on the edge to extend his lead to 7-0. A step-out gives Amos an 8-0 technical superiority. 

Quarterfinals (60 kg): Arslanbek Salimov (POL) over Nic Bouzakis, 11-5

Salimov threw Bouzakis to his back for four but Bouzakis scored on an exposure from the bottom and came out on top of the position, but was behind 4-2 during the exchange. He scored a step-out moments later to cut the lead to 4-3. Salivmov tossed Bouzakis with a four-point throw to extend his lead to 8-3. Bouzakis picked up two more on an exposure during the exchange but Salimov led 8-5 heading into the break.

Salimov started the scoring in the second period with a one-point step-out and a takedown for an 11-5 lead. Another step-out made it 12-5.

Quarterfinals (97 kg): Braxton Amos over Mustafa Olgun (TUR), 8-1

Amos got on the board first with a passivity point against Olgun but can’t get a turn. Amos took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Olgun picked up a passivity point against Amos for a 1-1 criteria lead but opts to stay on his feet. Amos scored on a step-out to get the lead back, 2-1. Amos spun behind on a shot from Olgun for a 4-1 lead. Olgun tried a desperation throw but gave up four points. Amos gets the win and a spot in the semis, 8-1. 

Semifinals (97 kg): Aleksei Mileshin (RUS) over Braxton Amos, 9-0

Mileshin scored first with a takedown that went out of bounds. Amos called for a one-point passivity and turned twice, giving Mileshin a 7-0 lead. A takedown a few seconds later gave Mileshin a 9-0 technical superiority.
