With so many studs in the field at the PIAA Team State Championships, at least a handful of great matchups were bound to happen. Here are the five matches that are worth your time to go back and either rewatch or watch for the first time.
132 lbs: Kenny Herrmann, Bethlehem Catholic vs Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, Seneca Valley
A battle between two future D1 wrestlers. Herrman, who is currently ranked #8 at 138, is a Harvard commit. And Herrera-Rondon, a two-time state champ junior who is currently ranked #14 at 132, is an Oklahoma commit.
After starting out the season at 138, Herrmann is looking really solid down at 132. He put on an excellent display of riding ability and even picked up a reversal against a guy with an excellent top game in Herrera-Rondon.
113 lbs: Brett Ungar, Notre Dame GP vs Gary Steen, Reynolds
This OT rematch from the Ironman finals did not disappoint. What do you think, did Steen have the takedown in overtime? Was the takedown call in overtime too fast? Hopefully now that these two have split matches, the grudge match will go down at the PIAA Individual State Tournament on March 5-7. Hear Ungar talk about the victory HERE.
106 lbs: Tyler Kasak, Bethlehem Catholic vs Mac Church, Waynesburg Central
Tyler Kasak and Mac Church are two of the best freshmen in PA. Both of these wrestlers were great in middle school and are already on the Freshman Big Board. This match came down to one exchange (0:57 timestamp), a great shuck bye from Church, but a beautiful roll through from Kasak that ultimately got him the only takedown of the match. After that Kasak did an excellent job of sticking to his gameplan of remaining low and focused. Hear him talk more about that strategy, his weight cut to 106, and more HERE.
170 lbs: Luca Augustine, Waynesburg Central vs Connor Herceg, Nazareth
Another battle between two future D1 wrestlers. And despite this being a 1-1 match going into overtime, a battle it was in the AAA finals. Augustine is currently ranked #18 in the country at 160 and committed to wrestle at Pitt in two years, but he bumped up to take on Connor Herceg. Herceg, who was a state placer a year ago and committed to Lehigh, has only lost to nationally ranked guys this year. It was the top game of Augustine that ultimately made the difference.
120 lbs: Kole Biscoe, Southern Columbia vs Nathan Holderbaum, Chestnut Ridge
Back-to-back years now this match has occurred in the Team State semifinals and back-to-back years now Biscoe has won. Holderbaum, a returning state placer, didn’t go down without a fight (and even had a cradle locked up, but stopped for potentially dangerous in the third), but Biscoe was just a little too much.
