2025 NCAA D3 Championships: JWU, Wartburg Share Title In Dramatic Team Race

There are new fingerprints on the NCAA Division 3 team trophy.

And there are still familiar ones, too.

One of the most captivating team races in NCAA history resulted in the first shared national title in 92 years with Johnson & Wales tying Wartburg with 83.5 points in a dramatic, down-to-the-final-seconds team race Saturday night in Providence. It’s the first time in 31 years that a team other than Augsburg or Wartburg has gotten its hands on the D3 title trophy. It's the first team title for Johnson & Wales and the 16th for Wartburg.

Three teams entered the final round with an opportunity to take home the title, but Augsburg fell out of contention when the Auggies dropped both of their championship matches.

Johnson & Wales entered the final round with a 1-point lead over Wartburg and the Wildcats stretched their lead when Hayden Brown notched a 5-0 win against previously unbeaten Angelo Centrone of Cortland in the 149-pound title bout.

Warburg evened the score when Massoma Endene captured his third national title with an 11-3 major decision against Cameron Butka of Wilkes at 197. The Knights moved into the lead minutes later when heavyweight Mitch Williamson scored a last-second takedown to beat the Coast Guard’s Carl DiGiorgio 4-1.

That put Johnson & Wales’ title hopes in the hands of Joziah Fry, the Wildcats’ most decorated wrestler. Fry entered Saturday night as perhaps the biggest favorite in the finals. He’d never lost to a D3 opponent and had beaten his finals opponent — North Central’s Christian Guzman — 21-3 and 18-8 in two previous meetings.

But Guzman nearly took Fry down early in the opening period and later opened the scoring with the bout’s first takedown. The match flipped in Fry’s favor late in the first period when he scored a takedown and then caught Guzman rolling around for a four-point near-fall. Fry scored a reversal early in the third period to extend his lead to six, but he couldn’t finish an attack on the edge of the mat that would’ve given Johnson & Wales an outright title and settled for a 10-5 win.

It’s the second time in NCAA history that two teams have tied for a wrestling national title. Iowa State and Oklahoma State shared the Division 1 title in 1933.
