The Seahawks Play A High-Scoring and Unselfish Offensive Style
Each season in Siddle's tenure, which began during the COVID pandemic in 2020, the UNCW coach has successfully tailored his strategy to the makeup of the roster. In the last two campaigns, that has meant pushing the tempo on offense and scoring points in bunches.
For the second straight campaign, the Seahawks rank in the nation's top 80 in KenPom.com adjusted offensive efficiency. They make up for middling 3-point shooting by effectively attacking the rim, which manifests in both a 2-point field-goal percentage of near 56 and the ability to get to the foul line frequently. UNCW scores 21.4 percent of its 79.4 points per game — the 50th-highest output in the nation — at the charity stripe.
This has the dual effect of getting the Seahawks easy points, and putting opponents into foul trouble.
The interior duo of Harlan Obioha and Khamari McGriff both factor in prominently, each shooting north of 63 percent from inside the arc on the season, and both ranking among the nation's most effective players at drawing fouls. Obioha ranks No. 68 in this category among all Div. I Players per KenPom.com metrics, ahead of such noteworthy names as Purdue's Trey Kaufman-Renn and Duke freshman phenom Cooper Flagg.
Further adding to UNCW's offensive efficiency is its unselfishness. The Seahawks score more than 54 percent of their field goals off of 15.2 assists per game. This distribution of the ball makes UNCW difficult to defend, with seven scorers of the current lineup posting from 7.3 to 14.6 points per game.
UNCW's CAA Championship win over Delaware showcased the team's balance, with Noah Ross scoring 14 big points in the defeat of Delaware.
UNCW Dominates on the Offensive Glass
Another contributing factor to UNCW's offensive efficiency is the Seahawks work on the boards. Snaring 35.5 percent of its own misses, UNCW ranks 31st nationally in offensive rebounding percentage.
UNCW's lineup features four of the country's top 500 players in offensive rebounding rate, led by Obioha at No. 24 among all of Div. I. Of his 5.9 total rebounds per game, 2.5 come from the offensive glass.
He's also one of five Seahawks averaging at least 1.5 offensive boards per game.
Dynamite Donovan Newby is Poised to Be A March Madness Star
Steering the ship for UNCW on both offense and defense, veteran guard Donovan Newby is built for the big stage of March Madness.
Newby's the driving force of the Seahawks offense with a team-leading 14.6-point per game average. He hits a team-leading 2.2 3-pointers per game, and makes opponents pay for putting him at the foul line with a free-throw shooting percentage approaching 90.
The combo guard Newby is also UNCW's leader in assists at 3.5 per game, maintaining a near-3-to-1 assist:turnover ratio. Newby's dynamic all-around game is tailor-made for him to be an NCAA Tournament sensation — and that's only talking about his offense.
Defensively, Newby sets the tone with his tenacious ball pressure on opposing point guards. He averages 1.2 steals per game, and perhaps more impressively, put together a streak of 20 consecutive games with at least one takeaway. He's one of two especially aggressive UNCW defenders the opposition must be prepared for come tournament time.
UNCW Needs March Madness Experienced Sean Moore At His Best
Any team with March Madness aspirations beyond just being in the field needs an X-factor who can chip in across all facets. It also helps for a team to have meaningful Tournament experience to provide a steadying presence in the high-stakes atmosphere.
In Sean Moore, UNCW has both.
Moore can put up points: He averages 8.8 points per game and shooting almost 55 percent from inside the 3-point arc. He's scored in double-figures 14 times, including games of 28 and 23 during the CAA season. Foul trouble limited him in the CAA semifinal win over Charleston, in which he went scoreless. He shot only 1-of-7 from the floor in the title round against Delaware for two points, but he impacted the game with eight rebounds in 18 minutes.
Likewise, Moore's defense and timely rebounding against Charleston was crucial. UNCW doesn't necessarily need him putting up big points, so long as he's available to force takeaways and contribute on the glass — where, at 6.5 rebounds per game, he leads the team.
What's more, having Moore's March Madness savvy on the court could pay huge dividends. He was critical to arguably the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history just two years ago, scoring a team-high 19 points, grabbing five rebounds, swiping a steal and blocking two shots in Fairleigh Dickinson's landmark win over Purdue.
Moore hit a crucial 3-pointer down the stretch in that game, but it was his sensational defense — a steal from Zach Edey and block of Braden Smith — that stole the show. He now has the opportunity to play a similarly vital part in UNCW's pursuit of the program's first NCAA Tournament win since beating USC in 2002.
