The BIG EAST Conference traditionally has been a tough place to play women's basketball, unless it says UConn on the front of your jersey.

That’s not a knock on the quality of the other teams; it’s just a fact.

Since the first BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament in 1983, the Huskies have won 22 times, including the last four.

UConn again is the No. 1 seed for upcoming 2025 BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament presented by JEEP after an undefeated run through conference play this season. Can the Huskies win a fifth consecutive tournament title for the third time in the event’s short history?

The 2025 tournament is set for March 7-10 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, with the three first-round games taking place throughout the day Friday – live on FloCollege and the FloSports app.

All 11 of the conference’s teams have advanced to the tournament, with the top five teams from the regular-season standings earning first-round byes.

As we all prepare to settle in for a long and exciting month of madness, here are some things to know about the BIG EAST Conference and the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament:

Here are the 11 BIG EAST women’s basketball teams for the 2024-2025 season and how they placed in the conference standings:

About The BIG EAST Conference

The BIG EAST Conference plays basketball at the NCAA Division I level. The conference includes 11 teams this year.

For the 2025 conference tournament, based on the regular-season standings, UConn, Creighton, Seton Hall, Marquette and Villanova all will get to sit out the first round. That’s great for them, but it also means their games this year won’t be played exclusively for FloCollege subscribers.

In the final of the 2024 BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament, UConn defeated Georgetown 78-42.

Three BIG EAST teams ended up advancing to the 2024 NCAA Tournament – UConn, Creighton and Marquette. UConn made it the farthest in the tournament, earning a spot in the Final Four, where the Huskies lost to eventual national runner-up Iowa. South Carolina won it all.

Four additional teams advanced to the inaugural 32-team Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament – Georgetown, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova. Illinois defeated Villanova to win the event.

About UConn Women’s Basketball

UConn, the No. 3 team in the latest AP NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Rankings, earned the top seed for the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament for the fifth consecutive year and was able to deliver a tournament win each of the past four seasons.

The Huskies topped the regular-season standings for the 21st time this year and are aiming to claim their record-extending 23rd Big EAST Tournament title. DePaul is next on the all-time wins list with five tournament titles.

Of course, winning the tournament also means earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament, where the Huskies have continued to be a dominant force, too.

UConn also holds the record for the most NCAA Division I women’s basketball national championships with 11. Tennessee is next on the list with eight.

The most recent championship for UConn was 2016, and that was the fourth consecutive win for the Huskies. Head coach Geno Auriemma has coached the team for all 11 national titles. He’s now in his 40th season at the helm.

In The BIG EAST, Success Has Been Cyclical

It may seem hard to believe, since UConn has won 22 of the 42 editions of the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament, but those wins pretty much have come in clusters.

Rebuilding simply is a reality in any sport, especially in college, where teams only get four or five years with the players.

The tournament was held for the first time in 1983, with St. John’s winning the first two. UConn didn’t win for the first time until the end of the decade, and even then, it was one-off victories in 1989 and 1991.

Then came the dynasty.

The Huskies won nine consecutive times from 1994-2002, and another two in 2005 and 2006.

Another five-bagger came from 2009-2012, followed by an eight-year drought.

Auriemma seems to have gotten things back in order and has the right pieces in place, as the Huskies have won the tournament each year since 2021.

The big question is – how long can the run last this time?
