5 Things To Know About Masanosuke Ono Heading Into FWNIA

57 kg 2024 Summer Olympic Silver medalist Spencer Lee and rising star 61 kg 2024 World Champion Masanosuke Ono are set to meet in the headlining match-up to end a night full of wrestling greats colliding head-on during the newest edition of FloWrestling Night In America at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.

For Lee, a three-time NCAA, two-time US National Champion and two-time U20 World Champion, the match comes on friendly turf as the legendary Iowa Wrestling star gets to face Ono far away from his home in Japan.

One of the biggest wrestling match-ups of the year is here. Spencer Lee will take on Masanosuke Ono at FloWrestling Night In America. Here are five things to know about Ono heading into tonight's battle.

Ono's Quick Rise Explained

Masanosuke Ono made his senior-level international debut in March last year at the Yasar Dogu at 61 kg. He went 5-0 to claim the gold and only allowed his opponents to score 2 points against his 42.

A month later, he became the Japanese National Champion and punched his ticket to the 2024 World Championships.

In September, Ono continued to dominate at the U20 World Championships with a win over USA's Marcus Blaze in the semifinals.

Finally, he wrapped up his groundbreaking year with a win at the World Championships where he defeated multiple wrestlers that previously staked their claim as the best wrestlers in the world.

Where Does Ono Rank Amongst The Best?

Ono is currently ranked No. 7 in FloWrestling's pound-for-pound rankings, behind fellow Japanese wrestlers Rei Higuchi and Kotoro Kiyooka—both of which earned Olympic Gold medals in France.

Ono is the top-ranked wrestler at 61 kg, however, beating out reigning World champion Vito Arujau and Olympic champion Zaur Uguev for the top spot after defeating them in Albania.

Ono Completes Historic Year At 2024 World Championships

Ono's route to gold at the 2024 World Championships was not easy—his offensive aggression helped him with powerful leg attacks, gut wrenches, and turns that put his opponents on the back foot.

Spencer Lee Talks About Countering Ono's Strengths

Christian Pyles caught up with Spencer Lee earlier this week to discuss the upcoming bout and see how he's prepared to match his strengths against Ono's weaknesses, and vice versa, to position himself for a chance at victory over the World Champion.

Pyles asked, "Have you put any added emphasis on par terre defense given [Ono's] strength in that position?"

"We always do. When you're just a par terre guy, you really want to be proficient in both top and bottom because sometimes you can get in trouble turning a guy and they can step over you. Then, they get on top or you get taken down quickly. You've just got to be ready to go. We work a lot on par terre bottom."

"He's got a really unique turn. He's really explosive... we put some emphasis on not getting turned."

What's Next For Masanosuke Ono?

United World Wrestling made the announcement after the Japanese Wrestling Federation published news in late January that Ono would be moving down to 57kg to compete for Japan. It means that Japan will have five Olympic or World finalists in their lineup between 57kg and 74kg.

UWW reported that it's likely Olympic Gold Medalist Rei Higuchi will move back to the heavier 61kg that he's already earned a world title in.
