Hobbs Kessler was not going to be denied on Saturday evening. The 21-year-old star stormed to the win at the USATF Indoor Championships, winning his first-ever U.S. title in the men's 3,000m.

Kessler closed with a 2:26.87 last 1,000m to run a 7:38.00, meet record. He won the race by over just .02 seconds over Dylan Jacobs (OAC). Jacobs will also qualify for the World Championship Team by virtue of his finishing position.

Sam Gilman (New Balance) finished in third, just six-tenths behind Kessler. He ran a 7:38.64, holding third over the final two laps.

Kessler positioned himself in third for most of the race. He finally moved into the lead with 400m to go and covered the final two laps in a devastating 55.30.

It may be his first national title, but it won't be Kessler's first trip to a World Championship. To bookend the 2024 indoor track and field season, Kessler earned bronze in the men's 1,500m at the championships in Glasgow. Then over the summer, the youngster qualified for the Olympic Games in the 800m and 1,500m. 

He would eventually finish fifth in the 1,500m in Paris with a time of 3:29.45. That was the famous race that saw Cole Hocker win gold and Yared Nuguse take bronze for the American contingent. Kessler was the lone American held off of the podium.

Kessler will be back in action for tomorrow's 1,500m championship, and he has the chance to complete a sweep of the two events. That field features the likes of Vincent Ciattei, Joe Waskom, Luke Houser and Erik Holt. A full entry list can be found here.
