Cal O'Reilly Becomes Ninth Player To Reach 1,000 Games In The AHL
Cal O'Reilly became just the ninth player in the AHL's 89-year history to play in 1,000 games in his career, reaching the milestone Thursday.

Fewer than 10 players in the 89-year history of the AHL have accomplished what veteran Cal O’Reilly did on Thursday. During a school day game against the Chicago Wolves, the Milwaukee Admirals forward became the ninth player to skate 1,000 regular-season games in his AHL career.

The 38-year-old is playing in his 18th season in the league and is still an effective player who has been a leader in multiple ways over the length of his career. Currently in his second stint with the Milwaukee Admirals after starting his pro career there back in the 2005-06 season, O’Reilly is second on the team in points with 30 and has a team-best 24 assists.

Congratulations to our very own Cal O'Reilly on reaching 1,000 @TheAHL games, a feat only eight other players in league history have ever achieved.#MILhockey pic.twitter.com/x1YZYyjBUi
By playing in Thursday’s game, O’Reilly joined the exclusive group that includes Willie Marshall (1,205 career AHL games), Fred Glover (1,201), Bryan Helmer (1,117), Brett Sutter (1,090), Harry Pidhirny (1,071), Mike Nykoluk (1,069), Jody Gage (1,038) and Rob Murray (1,018), each of whom is a member of the AHL Hall of Fame.

O’Reilly’s path to that same status is assured.
He entered the AHL as a fifth-round draft pick of the Nashville Predators in the 2005 NHL Draft. O’Reilly skated in his first AHL game on April 14, 2006 after completing his best season as a member of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires.
He has played for eight different AHL franchises over the years including the Admirals, Portland Pirates, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Utica Comets, Rochester Americans, Toronto Marlies, Iowa Wild and Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He has served as a team captain in Utica, Rochester, Iowa and Lehigh Valley over his career as well.
In addition to his AHL regular-season games, he has appeared in 105 Calder Cup Playoffs games.
O’Reilly has appeared in 145 NHL games as well, including stints with the Predators, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and Minnesota Wild.
His younger brother, Ryan O’Reilly of the Nashville Predators was in attendance for Cal’s 1,000th game with the NHL currently on break for the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Ryan O’Reilly, forever his big brother’s biggest fan 😂#MILhockey | #1KforCal pic.twitter.com/Sgd2ySRn7K
In his 1,000 AHL games, O’Reilly has accounted for 764 points, which is top 20 in the league all-time. He is second among active players as well. Perhaps the most astonishing stat of O’Reilly’s career, however, is how few penalties he has taken with just 190 minutes in his 1,000 AHL games. He has never had more than 22 PIM in a single season.
While the AHL is about developing the future stars, it doesn’t work without players like Cal O’Reilly. His veteran presence, experience and the ability to be an effective producer this far into his career makes him an asset to organizations looking to help teach their youngsters to be pros.
