Minutes after seeing their undefeated start to the 2025 collegiate softball season come to an end against Stanford at the 2025 Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, the Texas Longhorns took out any disappointment they may have had on the Colorado State Rams.

Ranked No. 1 in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll, Texas (12-1) scored in every opportunity during the shortened five-inning game against Colorado State (4-7), pulling away for good with nine runs in the top of the fourth inning.

The final score Friday afternoon at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium ended up being 18-2. The performance was the most runs Texas has scored in a game this season.

The matchup with Colorado State was the second of five games Texas will play this weekend at the Hillenbrand Invitational, and the two teams will meet again Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern.

The Longhorns tallied 13 hits against the Rams, including four home runs, two of which were hit by junior Reese Atwood.

Atwood was 3 for 3 in the game with five RBIs and three runs scored. Redshirt junior Ashton Maloney also had three hits for the Longhorns.

The pitching duties in the win went to senior right-hander Mac Morgan (3-0), who picked up her third victory of the year. She pitched all five innings against the Rams, giving up two runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out one. She faced 18 batters.

The losing pitcher Friday afternoon was junior right-hander Giselle Bentley (1-5). She lasted 3 1/3 innings against Texas, giving up nine runs on nine hits, while walking three and striking out two. She was one of three pitchers in the circle for Colorado State.

Offensively for the Rams, both hits came in the second inning. Freshman Kyra Smith hit a single and then scored on a home run by sophomore infielder Jailey Wilson.

The 2025 edition of the Hillenbrand Invitational is taking place at Hillenbrand Stadium, home of the Arizona softball team, from Feb. 20-23, and includes Arizona, Colorado State, Stanford, UC Davis and 2024 national runner-up Texas.

Arizona has been a gracious host to start the 2025 season, welcoming teams to Tucson for a series of events – the Candrea Classic (Feb. 6-9), Bear Down Fiesta (Feb. 13-16) and Hillenbrand Invitational (Feb. 20-23).

Up next for Texas will be a meeting with UC Davis on Saturday at noon Eastern, while Colorado State will turn right around and play host Arizona on Friday night at 9 p.m. Eastern.

About Texas Softball

The Texas softball team was the national runner-up to Oklahoma last season, but due to the number of players the Sooners lost from their roster, Texas has surged into the top spot in the national poll.

As they begin their inaugural season of softball in the mighty Southeastern Conference, the Longhorns are 11-0 across four events – the Louisiana Classic, UH/LU Tournament, Bearkat Classic and Bevo Classic, outscoring their opponents 86-20.

Last year, Texas won a program-record 55 games on the way to a 55-10 record, which included a 23-4 mark in the team’s final year of play in the Big 12. The Longhorns won the conference’s regular-season title but came up short against Oklahoma in the championship game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship.

In the championship series of the 2024 NCAA Women’s College World Series, Oklahoma swept Texas 2-0.

Texas Softball Racking Up The Accolades In 2025

Sophomore right-hander Teagan Kavan had a great week, which saw her named SEC Pitcher of the Week and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Pitcher of the Week.

Kavan made two starts and pitched 13 innings. Along the way, she became the first UT hurler since 2006 to strike out 18 or more batters in a single game. She is 4-0 this season.
