Catawba's Janiya Foskey Tops This Week's Video Game Numbers

Another week, another edition of Video Game Numbers served up fresh.

The weekly FloCollege list of the best and biggest performances across the week in college basketball returns, with the weeks counting down until March, and the stat lines staying as eye-popping as ever.

Here’s a look back at college basketball’s Video Game Numbers from the week that was across the NCAA landscape:

NOTE: Stats are for the week from Feb. 10-16

Men's NCAA College Basketball Stats

Division I: JT Toppin, F, Texas Tech

The No. 9-ranked Red Raiders have been an awesome team to watch all season, and a big reason for that is because Toppin — a sophomore who transferred to Texas Tech in the offseason after an impressive freshman season at New Mexico — has adapted smoothly to having a superstar’s role in Lubbock.

Toppin had already been churning out strong performances for the Red Raiders well before his two games this past week against Arizona State and Oklahoma State (both Tech wins) last Wednesday and Saturday, respectively. And then against the Sun Devils and Cowboys, Toppin upped his game up a notch.

In a double-overtime barnburner at home against ASU, Toppin finished with a career-high 41 points (the most by any Big 12 Conference player this season) with 15 rebounds as part of a mammoth 44-minute effort in the Red Raiders’ 111-106 win, with him also picking up a pair of steals in the game’s final minute to help ice it.

Toppin’s hot streak hardly cooled down when he suited up a few nights later on the road at OSU, however, as he picked up another monster 32-point, 12-rebound double-double against the Cowboys in a much more cozy 93-55 Tech victory, with his first two 30 plus-point games of the season coming at just the right time with the Red Raiders in the Big 12 regular-season title hunt.

Division II: Rob Matos, G, Molloy

The Lions may be well below .500 on the year (8-15 overall as of Monday night), but they do also have one of the best offensive weapons in all of D-II this season in Matos, who is more than capable of being able to give any team on Molloy’s schedule a handful.

Against undefeated Daemen last Friday, Matos had a decent game against one of the national title frontrunners, scoring 16 points. But it was his outing two nights later at D’Youville that sealed the sophomore a spot on this week’s Video Game Numbers list.

Though Molloy lost to the Saints by a 93-87 margin, that wasn’t due to a lack of trying from Matos, who exploded for a career-high 46 points as he did all that he could to get the Lions back in the win column. He shot 16 for 24 from the field against the Saints with a pair of 3-pointers, also scoring 18 points in a seven-minute stretch in the second half as he tried to rally Molloy to  a late victory after it faced a five-point deficit at the half.

By far Matos’ best game of his college career as his previous career high was 30 points, he’ll be trying to help the Lions finish the regular season on a strong note, even as much of their year hasn’t gone to plan.

Division III: Brandon Goris, G, Worcester State

If you’re within striking distance of a 44-point quadruple-double, that gets our attention.

It was also just another night for Goris, who’s been the heartbeat of a Lancers team that's now won six in a row entering this week after starting the season 5-12.

Last Wednesday against Bridgewater State (a 99-86 WSU win), Goris was great, scoring 23 points with seven steals (a new season-high) as he put up a strong two-way performance. But in the game that followed last Saturday on the road at Salem State, Goris then put up one of the best single-game performances you’ll find at any level of college basketball this season.

In the Lancers’ overtime 104-99 win, Goris was on another level of unstoppable as he finished with 44 points with nine rebounds, eight assists and seven steals, flirting with the ultra-rare quadruple-double as finished 18-for-24 shooting with three 3-pointers as he stuffed the stat sheet in a statement way. He scored 10 points in overtime alone, pacing WSU to a chaotic victory as he finished a perfect 4 for 4 from the field in the extra period.

D-III’s got a lot of ballers, too, and on any given night in the division, you can see players have the type of games (like Goris this past weekend) that just don’t happen anywhere else in college hoops.

NCAA Women's College Basketball Stats

Division I: JuJu Watkins, G, USC

USC-UCLA was the can’t-miss showdown of the women’s college basketball calendar last Thursday night, with Watkins being that game’s biggest can’t-miss superstar as one of the country’s most electric guards.

What the All-American did in a rivalry victory over the Bruins in the Battle of LA, however, was another level of special.

In the Trojans’ first victory over an Associated Press No. 1-ranked opponent since 1983, Watkins led the charge as USC handed UCLA its first loss of the season in a 71-60 classic at the Galen Center with Watkins putting up one of the best performances, considering the circumstances, seen in women’s college hoops this season: 38 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks, five assists.

According to ESPN, Watkins’ monster game was the first in the past 20 seasons across D-I women’s hoops in which a player scored at least 35 points with at least five blocks and five assists — and she did it against the then-No. 1 team in the country and a national title contender. Throw in the fact that she was lights-out from deep (six 3-pointers) and it’s easy to see why Watkins is tipped by many to have a bright future in the WNBA one day.

Division II: Janiya Foskey, F, Catawba

It was a huge week for Catawba as a top-10 upset over then No. 9-ranked Coker last Wednesday then led to a big win on the road last Saturday against Emory & Henry. Foskey was heavily involved in both of those victories, earning her spot on Video Game Numbers for this week thanks to a pair of massive double-doubles.

Against the South Atlantic Conference-leading Cobras, Foskey and Catawba snapped Coker’s 14-game winning streak off the back of a 21-point, 10-rebound performance from Foskey to make it four straight games of at least 20 points from her. Down for much of the game, Foskey helped pace Catawba to taking the lead in the fourth quarter (her team’s first lead against the Cobras since the score was 2-0) and helped it hold on to pick up a major victory.

When she and Catawba got to play next a few nights later against Emory & Henry, however, Foskey one-upped herself and had an even better night.

The senior dropped a career-high 38 points with 12 rebounds to boot in Catawba’s 84-70 victory over E&H, clinching her team a top-five seed in the upcoming SAC tournament in the process as she shot an efficient 16 for 24 (66.7%) from the floor for the game. Her performances lately (averaging 25.2 points per game over her last five games) have been exactly the spark that Catawba has needed to propel them toward the end of the regular season, which wraps up March 1.

Division III: Mary Schleusner, F, Washington and Lee

Schleusner’s second appearance of the season on Video Game Numbers, the one-woman machine down low for the Generals only had one qualifying game for this week, but one was all that she needed to be nominated.

In a 67-61 win over Shenandoah on Saturday in which her team was behind by 18 points at one point before coming back to snatch the victory, Schleusner was exceptional, scoring a season-high 42 points and bringing down a ridiculous 27 boards as D-III’s leading rebounder put up a vintage performance for W&L.

It was the seventh time this season that Schleusner had put up at least 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single game as the All-American continued to show out as part of her exceptional junior season for the Generals. What’s more, as part of W&L’s comeback win in which it outscored the Hornets 30-14 in the fourth quarter, Schleusner was unsurprisingly a major part of the rally, scoring 22 points in the final frame alone to make it three straight wins in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

The Generals now enter their final week of the regular season before the ODAC tournament, and with W&L looking to likely wrap up the No. 2 seed behind powerhouse conference leader Randolph-Macon, Schleusner will be looking to enter the postseason on a hot streak, even by her lofty standards.
