Atlantic Hockey America Women's First-Round Playoff Preview

The second season is officially here, as the Atlantic Hockey playoffs get underway this Saturday on the women’s side of the conference.

A pair of winner-take-all games will decide the quarterfinals with the winners moving on to face Penn State and Mercyhurst, who are the top two seeds. Penn State won the regular-season title with an AHA record 19 wins.

The semifinals begin on Feb. 28, followed by the championship game on March 8. The semifinals will utilize a best-of-three format and all playoff games will be streamed here on FloSports.

Here’s a look at both of this weekend’s matchups. Both games are slated for 3 p.m. EST.

No. 3 Syracuse vs. No. 6 Robert Morris

Syracuse (13-21-0, 11-9-0)

Head coach: Britni Smith (3rd season)
Point Leader: Bryn Saarela, Gr., F (16-12-28)
Between The Pipes: Allie Kelley (12-21-0, .927 save percentage, 2.67 GAA)

Last Impression: Syracuse finished the season with a 4-2 win at Mercyhurst and won six of its final seven games to clinch the No. 3 seed. The Orange out-scored their opponents 29-13 over those seven games and 53-43 in AHA play overall. Four different Syracuse skaters scored in the win over Mercyhurst and Allie Kelley – who started 33 of Syracuse’s 34 games this season – made 40 saves. Bryn Saarela also finished the regular season tied for third among AHA skaters with 16 goals and her 28 points ranked seventh. Syracuse won all four games in the season series and scored four or more goals against RMU in each of them.

Robert Morris (2-16-2, 8-23-3)

Head coach: Logan Bittle (2nd season)
Point Leader: Morgan Giannone, Jr., F (8-11-19)
Between The Pipes: Maggie Hatch, So. (7-16-2, .910 save percentage, 3.58 GAA)

Last Impression: Robert Morris was swept by Lindenwood last weekend and dropped to sixth in the standings as a result. The Colonials have dropped eight straight and have just two conference wins this season, which came a week apart at Lindenwood (Jan. 11) and against RIT (Jan. 18). RMU was out-scored 83-23 in conference play and 133-58 overall, and despite getting off to a 3-1-0 start this season, it’s been a struggle in AHA play.

No. 4 RIT vs. No. 5 Lindenwood

RIT (15-15-4, 8-10-2)

Head coach: Celeste Brown (5th season)
Point Leader: Addie Alvarez, So., F (6-24-30)
Between The Pipes: Sarah Coe, Sr. (10-11-2, .922 save percentage, 2.36 GAA)

Last Impression: RIT was swept by Penn State last weekend but put up quite the fight, especially in the finale. The Tigers tied the game late in the first period but ultimately fell in overtime, 2-1. RIT finished the season on a 4-5-1 stretch but is 8-7-4 on home ice this season and the Tigers’ lineup features one of the conference’s top defensemen in Emma Pickering. The sophomore scored a team-leading 11 goals during the regular season, which led all AHA defensemen and ranked ninth in the conference overall. RIT swept Lindenwood just two weeks ago and went 4-0-0 against the Lions this season.

Lindenwood (5-25-2, 4-15-1)

Head coach: Taylor Wasylk (2nd season)
Point Leader: Morgan Neitzke, Sr., F (14-12-26)
Between The Pipes: Anna LaRose, Sr. (2-13-0, .892 save percentage, 4.27 GA)

Last Impression: Lindenwood earned the above-mentioned wins at Robert Morris to close out the regular season and pull ahead of the Colonials in the standings. The wins were Lindenwood’s first since Nov. 23, which snapped a 14-game drought. Lindenwood out-scored RMU 11-3 in the series and was led by four goals from Morgan Neitzke and four points from Silje Gundersen. Anna LaRose and Catherine Hodgins each earned a win in the series, making 31 and 36 saves respectively.
