Long Beach State is so close to the host venue for the 2025 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic – at least compared to most teams (120 miles) – that the Beach might feel like the home team for each of their five games at the prestigious event.

Perhaps some friendly faces in the crowd will help the team improve on last year’s 1-4 performance.

Among this year’s opponents will be Minnesota, and the two will meet Feb. 23 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern. It will be the first of two games on the final day of the event for Long Beach State, which will close things down two hours later against Howard.

The 2025 edition of the Mary Nutter is taking place at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, California, from Feb. 20-23.

Few things are more unpredictable than the weather in Southern California, and heavy rains put a damper on the start of the Long Beach State softball season. 

The team’s first two games were canceled, but the extra day of rest proved fruitful, as Long Beach State finished the Stanford Invitational with three consecutive wins. 

The Beach will enter the upcoming Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at 4-5 overall following a 3-2 loss to Kansas. 

Long Beach State is coming off a 25-29 season that may look unsuccessful at first glance, but that includes a 20-7 mark in Big West play, which was good enough to finish second in the Big West softball standings behind Cal State Fullerton (39-19, 22-5).

Minnesota’s 2024 campaign wasn’t much more eventful, though the Golden Gophers did finish above .500 at 28-25. Unfortunately, their season ended with a loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament.

The new season has gotten off to a rocky start for Minnesota, which is 2-7 heading into the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Golden Gophers were 1-3 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, and 1-4 at the Joan Joyce Classic in Boca Raton, Florida. 

Minnesota did not participate in the Mary Nutter in 2024.

The 2025 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic will feature 31 teams, headlined by Tennessee, Nebraska and Utah.

About Big League Dreams Cathedral City

The Big League Dreams Sports Parks are scattered throughout the United States and provide recreational and tournament players of all ages the chance to compete on world-class fields, often built as replicas of famous stadiums from the storied history of Major League Baseball.

Along with the nostalgic fields, the Big League Dreams venues include a restaurant and bar, batting cages, play area for children, stadium seating and space for other sports (hockey, soccer, sand volleyball), events and competitions. 

Big League Dreams Cathedral City was the first of the eight BLD properties to open, doing so in 1998. The park includes five fields. Among them, Boston’s Fenway Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and New York’s Yankee Stadium.

Who Was Mary Nutter?

Mary Nutter was an All-American softball player and a pioneer in the sport. 

She was a coach at Pittsburgh State and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1988 and the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

Nutter died in 2012.
