One of the storylines tied to the California softball team heading into the 2025 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic is the recent success the Golden Bears have had at the event, which includes string of 11 consecutive wins that began in 2020.

Cal has a full slate of challengers lined up for this year’s edition, and should things continue in the same direction, the team’s final obstacle will be a talented Northwestern squad that landed at No. 21 on the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25.

The Golden Bears and Wildcats will meet at noon Eastern on an abbreviated final day of competition that will feature a dozen games. 

The 2025 edition of the Mary Nutter is taking place at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, California, from Feb. 20-23.

Cal is coming off a 37-19 season (9-13 in Pac-12 play) that ended with a quick exit from the regional round of the 2024 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. 

Prior to reaching the postseason bracket, the Golden Bears fell to Stanford in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Softball Championship, which was won by UCLA.

After almost two weeks of play in the new campaign, Cal is 6-2 heading into the 2025 Mary Nutter. 

The Golden Bears opened the year at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, where they defeated Minnesota, Utah and Maryland, while falling to Maryland and Arizona State. Cal then went 3-0 at the Wilson Invitational, beating Oregon State, Kansas and Iowa State. 

Cal was 5-0 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in 2024, and Northwestern was 2-2.

With the Mary Nutter up next, Northwestern is 5-5 overall after the NFCA Leadoff Classic and Purple & Gold Challenge. However, despite an average 3-2 start to the year, the Wildcats only slipped one spot in the rankings. Cal, on the other hand, went from No. 21 in the preseason to outside of the top 25, but still receiving votes. 

The 2025 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic will feature 31 teams, headlined by Tennessee, Nebraska and Utah.

The Big League Dreams Sports Parks are scattered throughout the United States and provide recreational and tournament players of all ages the chance to compete on world-class fields, often built as replicas of famous stadiums from the storied history of Major League Baseball.

Along with the nostalgic fields, the Big League Dreams venues include a restaurant and bar, batting cages, play area for children, stadium seating and space for other sports (hockey, soccer, sand volleyball), events and competitions. 

Big League Dreams Cathedral City was the first of the eight BLD properties to open, doing so in 1998. The park includes five fields. Among them, Boston’s Fenway Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and New York’s Yankee Stadium.

Who Was Mary Nutter?

Mary Nutter was an All-American softball player and a pioneer in the sport. 

She was a coach at Pittsburgh State and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1988 and the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

Nutter died in 2012.
