Our model takes into account a variety of factors, including domestic league performance, continental success, home and away form and other key factors.
As the season progresses, the race for domestic and international silverware intensifies, with clubs battling for supremacy in competitions like the Investec Champions Cup, the United Rugby Championship, Super Rugby, and the Gallagher Premiership. Some teams maintain their dominance, while others emerge as rising forces, pushing the traditional powerhouses to their limits.

1. Toulouse | N/A
Top 14 Record: 11-4-1
Still, our table toppers, albeit by just 0.2 rating points over Leinster following their deconstruction of Clermont in round 16 of the Top 14. Taking back the top spot in the league with Bordeaux losing away to Bayonne, the reigning champs are going to be tough to knock off the top spot this season.
2. Leinster Rugby | N/A
URC Record: 11 - 0
Staying unbeaten through the first 15 matches in all competitions is truly ludicrous and proves unequivocally that Leinster have taken yet another step forward this season. Playing out a tight fixture on the road against the Ospreys, where they were pushed to their limit with a young squad, was a great test for Leo Cullen’s side.
3. Glasgow Warriors | + 4
URC Record: 8 - 3
Entering that space of ‘super club’ where they can afford to lose the bulk of their squad to a national team and still be a force to be reckoned with. Wearing down the Dragons in round 11 of the URC, the reigning champions capitalized on the Bull's loss to put a clear separation between themselves and the Bulls. Sure, they are unlikely to overtake Leinster, but they look odds on favorites to secure a home run through to the final as 2nd place in the regular season.
4. RC Toulon | N/A
Top 14 Record: 11-5
Hitting the road and picking up an impressive victory over Montpellier moved them up into the top two on the Top 14 table. Our model has not quite put them ahead of UBB, but the points are closing quickly.
5. Union Bordeaux-Begles | - 2
Top 14 Record: 11-5
Slipping up on the road when the game was there for the taking away to Bayonne will sting. Sure, they were missing some world-class talent due to the Six Nations, but as their nearest competitors proved, they should have enough squad depth to overcome that.
6. Chiefs | N/A
Super Rugby Record: 1 - 0
Exacting some revenge on the Blues for last season’s final loss, the Chiefs got off to the perfect start in round one of Super Rugby Pacific. Despite trailing at half-time, the men from Hamilton kept their hosts scoreless in the second half, with Damian McKenzie playing lights-out rugby, scoring two tries to seal the deal.
7. Bath Rugby | - 1
Gallagher Premiership Record: 9 - 2
Sitting pretty atop the Gallagher Premiership standings with a strong record of 9 – 2 is both impressive and frustrating. It is impressive that they are clearly the class of the competition, and it is frustrating that they did not show that in the Investec Champions Cup.
8. Bristol | First Entry
Gallagher Premiership Record: 7 - 4
Second in the Premiership as things stand ensuring that the West Country reigns supreme until at least the end of the Six Nations. The Bears, like Bath, endured a torrid run in the Investec Champions Cup pool stages, but it does mean they can now pour all of their resources into the Premiership.
9. Vodacom Bulls | + 1
URC Record: 7 - 3
Slipping up at home to their closest rivals for the top South African spot on the combined URC log was a poor result in round 11. Making things worse was how easily the Sharks dominated them physically. Still, they sit one point clear of their coastal rivals and four clear of Munster (with a game in hand) and due to other results rise up one spot on our list.
10. Hollywoodbets Sharks | + 2
URC Record: 7 - 3
Closing the gap massively on their local rivals, the Sharks feel like a team on the rise which is worrying for the rest of the URC. Still awaiting the return of Eben Etzebeth and Siya Kolisi, the Durbanites will be itching to push Glasgow for the second spot on the table and, with it, a home semi-final.
11. Gloucester | First Entry
Gallagher Premiership Record: 6 - 5
Momentum in sports is a funny metric, one that cannot truly be quantified but is abundantly clear in a team’s performance. Last season, Gloucester slumped to a five-win Premiership season but was exceptional in the EPCR Challenge Cup, making it all the way to the final. This season, they have already bettered their league win total and sit in third position, just five points behind Bristol. Certainly, they face a tough run to the semi-finals in the condensed league format, but their form at present cannot be ignored.
12. Bayonne | + 9
Top 14 Record: 10-6
The Top 14’s surprise package thus far this season, the Basque country team, are looking mightily impressive. Claiming another key win in round 16 when they knocked over UBB, expect them to be a play-off team this season and crucially back in the Investec Champions Cup next season. Their win also set them flying up the table due to bonus points associated with beating a higher-ranked opponent.
13. Crusaders | First Entry
Super Rugby Record: 1 - 0
Back with a vengeance, Super Rugby’s most successful team overcame a 14-point deficit to snatch a victory over the Hurricanes in round one. Spearheading their attack was All Blacks superstar Will Jordan who was impervious throughout the fixture.
14. Munster Rugby | N/A
URC Record: 6 - 5
The former URC champions are starting to gather form at the right time once again this season – even if they appear to lose at least two players to injury each round. This time it was the paring of Thomas Ahern and Diarmuid Kilgallen (two players who would’ve been involved with the national set-up either with the senior team or A side this week). Nevertheless, they secured a key bonus point win over the Scarlets, which set them back into the top 5 on the overall log.
15. Northampton Saints | - 2
Gallagher Premiership Record: 5 - 6
Similar to Quins, the Saints have used the Investec Champions Cup as a springboard to jump-start their Premiership season. Unfortunately for the defending champions, their path to knockouts requires more things to roll their way, given they are nine points adrift of the top four.
16. Lyon | First Entry
Top 14 Record: 7-7-2
A big-time riser on our model, Lyon crushed La Rochelle 53 – 17 in this weekend’s action, which not only sent them skyrocketing up our rankings but crashed the two-time Investec Champions Cup winners off the list altogether
17. Harlequins | + 2
Currently on the outside looking in for a semi-final spot, the 6th-place Quins are more than capable of going on a tear to end the season. Winning three of their last five with one draw (excluding the Premiership Cup), the London side seem to be gathering form just at the right time.
18. Brumbies | - 7
Super Rugby Record: 1 - 0
Looking every bit the class of the Australian sides once again this season, Stephen Larkham’s side became the first Australian team to win in Fiji when they downed the Drua in round one. Adding to the impressive nature of the victory was the fact that they did so without their key Wallabies, who they opted to leave in Canberra.
19. Leicester Tigers | - 3
Gallagher Premiership Record: 6 - 4 - 1
Occupying the fourth slot in the Premiership at the time of writing, the Tigers have come back to the pack more recently following a strong start to the season. Unsure of who their head coach will be next season with Michael Cheika departing, the good feeling around Welford Road is not quite as buzzy as it was at the start of the season.
20. Sale Sharks | + 2
Gallagher Premiership Record: 6 - 5
Still firmly in the run for a knockout spot in the Gallagher Premiership, the Manchester side will need to work their way back into form following a patchy run of late. Dropping three of their past five Premiership matches has put them under pressure, but given the quality of their squad, a strong end to the season is not out of the question.
21. Waratahs | + 2
Super Rugby Record: 1 - 0
Starting their season in dramatic fashion with a last-minute victory over the Highlanders on Joseph Sua’ali’I’s debut. Proving why Rugby Australia targeted him as their marquee player, the fullback was uber-impressive both on and off the pitch. Dazzling under the high ball, the 21-year-old spent what felt like hours in the stands taking photos and signing autographs. Mark our words, he is a genuine superstar in the making.
22. Western Force | First Entry
Super Rugby Record: 1 - 0
Mirroring their cross-country rivals, the Force stunned Ardie Savea’s Moana Pasifika side with an overtime Ben Donaldson try and conversion. Making the win more special was that the fixture marked the Force’s twentieth season in existence.
23. Emirates Lions | First Entry
URC Record: 5 - 4
Back in the win column, the Lions blitzed the Stormers in the first half of their round 11 URC clash at Emirates Airlines Park. Scoring three first-half tries, they will be disappointed not to have secured a second-half bonus point as they not only allowed the Stormers back within seven points but couldn’t get the key fourth try.
24. Scarlets | First Entry
URC Record: 5 - 5 - 1
Losing at Thomond Park is no embarrassment, but the Scarlets will be disappointed by how they were physically bullied at points. Starting strong with a good defensive stand, they then conceded a few ‘soft’ tries in the second half. Still they continue to grow as a squad and are a real threat for the top eight this season.
25. Castres Olympique
Top 14 Record: 8-7-1
Drawing with Perpignan was just enough to keep Castres as our 25th ranked team but the points have closed considerably and will continue to do so as Super Rugby progresses.
