Two of the Western Conference’s top teams meet when the Ontario Reign visit the Calgary Wranglers this Saturday afternoon in the FloHockey AHL Game of the Week (4:00 p.m. ET).

Calgary (29-15-2-1) leads the Western Conference with 61 points, but the surging Reign have moved to within four points of the Wranglers and are third place in the Pacific Division. Sandwiched between Calgary and Ontario are the Colorado Eagles, who are just one point off Calgary’s pace. Both Calgary and Ontario possess excellent attacks that rank in the AHL’s top-10; the Wranglers are at 3.55 goals per game while the Reign are at 3.39. They also know how to close out games. Calgary and Ontario are among only three teams in the league that do not have a loss of any kind when leading after two periods.

The Wranglers, back home for the first time since Jan. 26, are in the middle of a stretch of 12 of 18 games on the road. Their 18 home wins tie them with Colorado for the AHL lead and their .771 point percentage on home ice as first overall. Ontario (27-14-2-1) has been excellent on the road with a 13-5-0-1 record (.711) that leads the Western Conference and is third-best in the league. That’s good news for a team that has a run of seven of eight games on the road in March and an April five-game road trip that includes another two-game stop in Calgary.

Both teams should be rested. They have not played since last Saturday night. The teams will meet in a rematch Monday afternoon at Scotiabank Saddledome as well as Sunday, Feb. 23 at Ontario. In their most recent get-together, the Wranglers took a 5-4 overtime win on Jan. 19 before the Reign won a 6-1 blowout two nights later.

Ontario Reign (Los Angeles Kings)

A deep veteran group of forwards power the Reign, who have churned out 13 goals in their past three games.

Former Calgary prospect Glenn Gawdin is tied for fourth in AHL scoring with 14-27-41 in 42 games. He has not been just feasting on the power play, either. Just nine of those 41 points have been power-play points. He is joined by time-tested forwards Charles Hudon, Jeff Malott, and Jack Studnicka, among others. And then there is AHL All-Star Samuel Fagemo, who had 43 goals in only 50 games last season to rank second in the AHL. He is back again, this time with 21 tallies through 44 games.

The Ontario blue line features puck-movers Joe Hicketts and Reilly Walsh, along with top prospect Jakub Dvořák. The 19-year-old Dvořák returned to the Reign in January after representing Czechia at the IIHF World Junior Championship and has settled back in the regular role that he had before being away from the team for a month.

Goaltending has been a remarkably stable position for the Reign. Veteran Pheonix Copley and prospect Erik Portillo have combined for 43 of the 45 total appearances by Ontario goaltenders this season.

Calgary Wranglers (Calgary Flames)

Calgary has the AHL’s fifth-best power play (22.0 percent) and a load of offensive weapons that make it go. Among those catalysts are veteran forwards Martin Frk and Dryden Hunt share the team scoring lead with 40 points.

There is youth, too, however. Forward William Strömgren (12-26-38) is in his second season with the Wranglers and is only two points off the team scoring lead. The Flames took him as a 2021 second-round pick. He is joined by rookie forward Sam Morton (13-19-32), who was a Hobey Baker Award finalist last season. Sam Honzek, taken 16th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, has fit in well with the Wranglers as a rookie as well.  The Wranglers have also been able to prosper without three key pieces up front that they had earlier in the season. Jakob Pelletier was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers while Matt Coronato and Walker Duehr have been promoted to the Flames.

On the back end is another rookie, Hunter Brzustewicz. The 20-year-old was a key piece in the return in a Jan. 2024 deal with the Vancouver Canucks for Elias Lindholm. He is joined by prospects Artem Grushnikov, Yan Kuznetsov, Jeremie Poirier, and Ilya Solovyov.

Devin Cooley, an offseason signing, has been stellar in net from the get-go for the Wranglers. The AHL All-Star is 18-9-2 | 2.26 | .927, tying for first in the AHL in wins and for second in save percentage. His goals-against average is fifth overall.
