The NCAA has made it a priority to manage the length of college baseball games for decades.

The enforcement of nine-inning games is a regular theme in NCAA Baseball, aiming to give a full-length matchup to fans.

But, since baseball is unpredictable, games can sometimes come to a tie at the end of nine innings, leading to extra innings to decide the winner of the match.

With the NCAA changing the rules of overtime in 2023, some fans might find it hard to follow what's going on down on the field. Here's a quick refresher on how overtime works in NCAA Baseball.

How Do Extra Innings Work In College Baseball?

Ties are a common possibility in baseball, with the NCAA dealing with them similarly to it's major-league brother, the MLB.

The NCAA's rules on overtime were changed in 2023 to reflect the MLB standard, calling for one runner from the batting team to start on second base in the overtime period.

Since these games tend to last quite some time with pitching changes and reviews racking up minutes, this overtime rule allows for a quicker resolution to the game, setting up the possibility for walk-off wins.

Walk-off wins have been a result of these newer changes in a number of games since the change took place at the beginning of the 2023 season.

How Many Innings Are There In NCAA College Baseball?

The NCAA has structured its rules to call for nine-inning games in most cases, pushing for it to be the golden standard of college baseball.

But in reality, NCAA Baseball matches can last anywhere from five, seven, nine and nine-plus innings.

Ties, double-headers and run rules can change a game's length, leading to various numbers of innings played.
