Oregon State Baseball Rallies Over Xavier After Three HRs In Two Innings

Xavier Baseball and Oregon State played in Surprise, AZ at the College Baseball Classic to open the D1 College Baseball season on Feb. 14. Read the recap.

In the first of two match-ups between the two at the College Baseball Classic, Xavier and Oregon State Baseball were set to play in Arizona on Friday afternoon to open the 2025 season.

The Oregon State Beavers entered the game ranked in the top 10 across most polls, being placed as high as 7th by D1Baseball and the USA Today Baseball Coaches Poll.

Xavier Baseball was projected to finish second by the Big East baseball coaches in the preseason poll, behind UConn who received seven out of eight first-place votes.

Xavier and Oregon State will play each other a second time on Monday, Feb. 17 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Things are looking handily in Oregon State's favor as the final inning begins at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise, AZ.

Joey Mundt took over pitching for Oregon State.

Anderson and Wachsmann grounded out quickly in two great plays from Singer to Krieg on first base.

Misch was grounded at the full count and Oregon State finished the rally with the five-run lead.

Oregon State Keeps It Moving With Two More Home Runs - Bottom 8th

Freshman Jack DeTienne checked in for Xavier.

Jacob Krieg hit a home run off as DeTienne's first batter.

Weber followed it up with a second immediately after.

Peterson struck out looking for DeTienne's first K of the year.

Talt flew out to center field.

Singer drew a walk to get on base with two outs.

Caraway walked as well, sending the pitching coach to the mound for Xavier again.

Arquette was hit with a pitch off the shoulder into his helmet, loading the bases with Turley up to bat.

Turley was walked as a run comes home for the Beavers.

Ironton, Ohio Freshman right-hander Jon Wylie entered the game for Xavier. He threw a strike on Macias before hitting a fly ball out to right field for the third out.

Matthew Morrell checked in for Segura to pitch for Oregon State.

Oregon State earned a double-play off of a grounder from Tucker, with the throw from home-run hitter Arquette to Krieg.

The inning ended with a grounder out hit by Hendrickson.

Arquette Home Run Puts Oregon State In Control - Bottom 7th

Xavier 3, Oregon State 5

Aiva Arquette bombed a perfect shot to center field for a home run to bring in Caraway and add two runs for the Beavers and bring the control back to Oregon State's side.

As the bats continue to roll, Turley hit a single to center field. Two outs.

Macias grounded out to flip the field and send them into the 8th.

Oregon Earns Two Runs To Tie - Bottom 7th

Xavier 3, Oregon State 3

No. 7 Oregon State returned to the plate with a chance to bring things closer against the projected Big East conference winner.

Weber grounded out from a strong hit to 3B that Lambdin was able to collect and return to first in time.

In the first walk in 15 batters, Peterson headed to first base.

Talt reached first on a fielder's choice, Peterson went out at second. 

Weber walked Singer as Oregon State's lineup returned to the top of the order with two runners on and two outs.

Caraway hit a single to left center field. A bad throw coming back in forced an error and gave the runners another base that brought the Beavers score up by two.

Wachsmann Hits Home Run On First Hit For Xavier - Top 7th

Adam Wachsmann has had a great game in Arizona so far, adding a solo home run to give Xavier the two-run lead and tally the first hit of the season for Xavier.

Misch was hit by a pitch, and Burdette hit a single to left field, popping it right over the third basemen to add a second runner on base. The rally continued for Xavier.

As the Oregon State crowd tried to energize Eric Segura, he threw a wild pitch giving a free base to Misch and Burdette. Bases became loaded up after Peters was walked on a high ball.

Following a meeting at the mound, Segura throws two mid-90s strikes that drew swings from Jelic.

2B Singer was able to make a stumbling catch on a Jelic pop fly into short right field for the third out.

Crunch Time - Top 7th

Xavier 2, Oregon State 1

Xavier has a chance to start their season with an upset if they can lock in the last three innings against the No. 7 Oregon State Beavers.

Turley caught a pop fly from Hendrickson for the first out.

Segura secured his third strikeout of the game against Anderson for the second out of the inning.

Xavier Pushes With 1-2-3 In Bottom Of 6th

Ben Weber returned to the mound for the 6th. 

Turley opened batting for the Beavers with a grounder out to 3B.

Tucker made a great play at second to first off of a ground ball from Krieg.

Xavier earns another 1-2-3 after some great in-field play to get them back at bat.

Beavers Briefly Stall Xavier's Momentum - Top 6th

Xavier 2, Oregon State 1

Peters started the inning with a grounder out to the shortstop.

Jelic was walked off a throw upstairs during a full count—it was their 8th base on balls so far.

The umpires called Jelic out on a pick off by Weber to first, before heading in to review the call. The call stood and he was called out to make it two.

Lambdin walked.

Lambdin made a steal to second and although Weber threw it quickly, Arquette had to receive the ball in an odd position and was unable to make the tag in time.

Segura secured the K to end the inning and stall Xavier's momentum slightly.

Xavier Leads With Two Runs And No Hits - Bottom 5th

Things have gone from bad to worse for Oregon State as Xavier found two points without any hits so far. The game's single hit came from Tyce Peterson.

Ben Weber started pitching at the bottom of the 5th inning for Xavier.

A great pitch to get the second out came from Weber on a nice breaking ball that locked up Caraway on what looked like it was high at first.

Xavier makes it 1-2-3 with the new pitcher to continue their push towards a potential upset.

Xavier Takes Momentum At Halfway Point, Takes Lead - Top 5th

Xavier 2, Oregon State 1

Hutcheson was pulled out by Oregon State to bring in reinforcements from the bullpen. Eric Segura came in midcount, with one out and the pressure at its highest point so far from Xavier. Runners were on second and third.

Macias made a great catch at the warning track off of a ride from Misch, who earned the first RBI for the Musketeers and to tie it up.

Segura made two wild pitches in a throw, the first of which Weber was able to save but the next went too far and gave Xavier the chance to take the lead with Anderson scoring another run.

Call Overturned At Third In Favor Of Xavier - Top 5th

Xavier 0, Oregon State 1

A new pitcher, AJ Hutcheson, took the mound to start the 5th inning for the Beavers. There was a short break for Hutcheson's pitching communication device to get some attention or a replacement.

No runs, hits, or errors for Xavier up to this point. One of each for Oregon State.

Hendrickson earns a lead-off walk to get on base for Xavier.

Another walk puts Anderson on base and the Beavers meet at the mound with no outs.

After an aggressive at-bat from Wachsmann, he ends up striking out swinging after three foul balls. Hutcheson earned a small win to build from.

On a stolen base from second to third, Weber made the quick throw off the pitch to 3B where the umpire called the runner out. Xavier immediately challenged the call for review. The call was overturned and called safe leaving Hendrickson in scoring position.

Wachsmann Makes Sliding Catch - Bottom 4th

Weber, Peterson, Talt to bat first for Oregon State.

Wachsmann made a sliding catch on a flying drive just short of the fence in right field from Weber.

The second out came from a fly ball off of Peterson's bat to left field.

Talt got out at first off of an infield hit.

Xavier Holds Steady - Top 4th

Xavier 0, Oregon State 1

Both pitchers have passed the 50-pitch count mark as they entered the fourth inning. Xavier was able to hold strong in the third and return to bat with Peters, Jelic, and Lambdin.

Peters struck out, Jelic walked on four balls. 

Lambdin reached first on a fielding error by Arquette with a rocket that hopped right in front of him that was a tough play to make.

Tucker hit a fly ball out to right field for an out to bring the Beavers back into the dugout.

Can OSU Keep The Bats Hot - Bottom 3rd

Xavier 0, Oregon State 1

Gavin Turley, Dallas Macias, and Jacob Krieg tried to keep the momentum moving for Oregon State in their offense half of the third inning.

Turley hit a high fly ball between center and right field for another Anderson conversion.

Anderson ran all around center field this inning, with Macias following Turley's fate.

Krieg hit a grounder to third that was received nicely by Xavier's Jake Lambdin who made the throw to first still in motion to send the teams into the fourth.

Oregon State Takes Momentum - Top 3rd

After two plays off of two grounders from Tucker and Hendrickson, the Beavers were able to get two quick outs to start the third. 

Anderson walked immediately after with four balls in a row to slow the momentum. Wachsmann followed, with an extended at-bat that included a full count and two foul balls.

Keljo gets out of the inning getting a change-up past Misch for the third strike with two runners on base.

Oregon State Earns First Run - Bottom 2nd

Xavier 0, Oregon State 1

Wilson Weber, Tyce Peterson, and Easton Talt will open up batting in the second inning for Oregon State. 

Weber hit a grounder to shortstop Peters to make a strong throw to first and get the out.

Peterson earned the first hit of the ball game with a high bouncing grounder near over the pitcher's right shoulder.

Talt was walked, prompting the first meeting at the mound for Xavier today.

Hooker was still struggling, with Singer loading the bases for Oregon State with Trent Caraway at the plate.

Caraway hit a long line drive out to center field but it was enough to get the first runner in and score a run for the Beavers.

Anderson made another catch off a fly ball from Arquette for the third out and to get the Musketeers out of the inning relatively unscathed.

Scoreless After First Inning - Top 2nd

Xavier 0, Oregon State 0

Xavier returns to the plate for a second look at Keljo.

Eddie Peters struck out swinging. 

Keljo seems to be more locked in after securing another strikeout on Jelic.

Lambdin popped it up to first for a catch from Jacob Krieg on first.

Jake Hooker Starting For Xavier - Bottom 1st

Xavier 0, Oregon State 0

Trent Caraway led off for Oregon State, Hooker opened with a good breaking ball to earn the third strike and the first K for Xavier this season.

Arquette walked on three balls in a row.

Hooker also walked Turley off of four balls in a row to put the second Beaver on base.

Dallas Macias, No. 90 on the FloBaseball MLB Draft Prospect Rankings Top 100 list, hit a high fly ball just short of a home run out to far right field where Wachsmann was ready. Arquette made it to third off the hit.

Krieg struck out looking with a full count to end the inning.

Keljo Starts On The Mound For The Beavers - Top 1st

Keljo came out aggressive but ended up walking Hendrickson on the first at-bat of the 2025 season.

Nelson Keljo got his first K with three strikes down the middle in a row against Aedan Anderson.

Wachsmann grounded out, but it was enough to advance Hendrickson.

Hendrickson made his way to third, getting a base off of wild pitch that got past Weber.

Macias made a diving catch for the third out in center field off of a hard hit from Eddie Peters.
