Louisville Takes Down No. 19 Texas 4-3 In Extra Innings At Globe Life Field
Louisville was silent for eight innings but came alive in the ninth and 10th to defeat Texas 4-3 at the 2025 Shriners Children’s College Showdown.

The Louisville baseball team took a while to get going offensively Friday against Texas at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, but it was worth the wait for the Cardinals and their fans, who got a 4-3 win over a top-25 team to kick off the 2025 season.
The Cardinals were unable to score through the first eight innings at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, but they rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and another two in the 10th to secure the win with a bases-loaded walk-off single from sophomore outfielder Lucas Moore.
The Shriners Children’s College Showdown again is being held at Globe Life Field, home of the world champion Texas Rangers, as part of three exciting weekends of college baseball in Texas.

The difference through eight and a half innings Friday was a one-out two-run opposite-field home run by Texas sophomore outfielder Will Gasparino in the second inning.
Otherwise, the contest was all either coach could ask for from their pitching staffs – until things went awry for the Longhorns in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Junior right-hander Ruger Riojas, a transfer from the University of Texas at San Antonio, was in his third inning of work, when he was tagged for a base hit and a long double off the top of the wall in left field, giving the Cardinals runners on second and third with one out.
Riojas was replaced by Will Mercer, a redshirt senior left-hander from Notre Dame, who gave up a two-run single to right field to senior Garret Pike, tying the game at 2-2.
A solo home run to freshman Adrian Rodriguez gave Texas a 3-2 advantage after the top of the 10th inning, but it wasn’t enough.
The Cardinals were relentless in the following inning, too, knocking Mercer out of the game, before redshirt senior Andre Duplantier II took the mound for Texas with runners on first and second with one out.
A passed ball and a hit batter later, Moore had the opportunity to step up and end it, which he did.
Mercer took the loss for Texas (0-1), and junior right-hander Tucker Biven, who pitched the final inning for Louisville (1-0) got the victory.
The game’s two starting pitchers – junior right-hander Patrick Forbes for Louisville and senior left-hander Jared Spencer for Texas – actually were pretty stellar in their performances, despite not getting a decision.
Forbes went five innings, giving up two runs on five hits, including the second-inning home run. He struck out 11 and walked just one.
Spencer was making his UT debut, after transferring from Indiana State.
In 5 2/3 innings of work, he gave up four hits and no runs. He struck out six and walked one. He also hit the first batter of the game.
In all, each team sent four pitchers to the mound.
Offensively for Louisville, three players had two hits, including Moore, who was 2 for 5. The Cardinals combined for 11 hits in the win.
Texas has nine hits and left nine runners on base. Only junior Max Belyeu had more than one hit in the contest. He was 2 for 5 and scored on the Gasparino homer.
It seems hard to believe, since the University of Texas is a perennial sports powerhouse, but in two previous trips to the College Baseball Showdown, the Longhorns were winless, going 0-6 across 2021 and 2023.
Now 0-7 at the event, they’ll have two more chances to get their first victory at the tournament and in 2025. Texas will face Ole Miss on Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern and finish the weekend against Oklahoma State on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. EST.
Louisville, playing at Globe Life Field for the first time, will be back in action against Oklahoma State on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST. The final game of the weekend for the Cardinals will be against Arizona on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. EST.
The schedule this month in Arlington includes the Shriners Children’s College Showdown (Feb. 14-16), Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented by Kubota Weekend 2 (Feb. 21-23) and Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented by Kubota Weekend 3 (Feb. 28-March 2).
There also will be midweek games on Feb. 18, Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and March 5.

About Texas Baseball
The road ahead for Texas will only get harder as the Longhorns work toward their debut in the powerful Southeastern Conference – the conference that sent 11 teams to the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship and four squads to the NCAA Men’s College World Series. Oh, and that was on by Tennessee to give the SEC a fifth consecutive baseball national championship.
The 2024 season wasn’t as memorable for the Longhorns, who were 36-24 overall and 20-10 in the Big 12, finishing third in the regular-season standings. Two quick losses in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship saw the dream of a final conference title go away, while a win and two losses saw the season come to a close at the NCAA College Station Regional.
Despite the quick exit from postseason play, Texas landed at No. 19 in the recently released D1Baseball Preseason Top 25 Rankings. Yes, that’s admirable, but at the same time, UT is the last of nine SEC teams to make the season’s initial top 25.
About Louisville Baseball
Louisville also plays in one of the dominant conferences in the country, the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the Cardinals sometimes struggle to keep up with the likes of Virginia, North Carolina and Florida State, which all are ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation.
The Cardinals finished fourth last year among the seven teams in the ACC’s Atlantic Division. They were picked to finish ninth this year in the new-look 16-team conference.
Louisville’s overall record in 2024 was 32-24, which included a 16-14 mark in conference action. The Cardinals were bounced from the ACC Baseball Championship with consecutive losses to Miami and Clemson.
