London Irish's Potential URC Move Could Boost Irish Rugby Talent Pipeline
London Irish's potential URC move could boost Irish rugby, providing game time for surplus talent while restoring the club to top-flight competition.

London Irish could be set for a return to top-flight rugby under new ownership, with the club exploring a potential move to the United Rugby Championship (URC)—a development that could significantly benefit Irish rugby.

A consortium led by former Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan has acquired the intellectual property, brand, and rights of London Irish after the club went into administration in June 2023 with more than £30 million in unpaid bills. The new owners, operating through investment vehicle Strangford Ellis Ltd, have ambitious plans to restore London Irish’s status in professional rugby.
“The primary goal of the new ownership is to return London Irish Rugby Club to the pinnacle of international professional club rugby, aiming for a swift return to top-flight competition,” Strangford Ellis said in a statement.
One of the most intriguing prospects under consideration is London Irish joining the URC, the multi-national league featuring teams from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Italy, and South Africa. If the move materializes, it could offer a strategic advantage to Irish rugby, providing game time for players stuck behind a backlog of talent in Ireland’s four provincial teams.
With Leinster, Munster, Ulster, and Connacht already competing in the URC, player development opportunities are often limited. A London Irish entry into the league could serve as a feeder system, allowing surplus talent from the Irish provinces to gain valuable playing experience at a high level while remaining in a competitive environment closely linked to the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).
Kyle Jordan, senior partner at Jordan Associates and Eddie Jordan’s son, emphasized the consortium’s commitment to rugby and the global Irish community.
“We are incredibly excited about this opportunity to steer London Irish towards new heights,” he said. “Our investors bring not just financial backing, but a profound passion for rugby and a commitment to the community, and in particular, want to reach out to the global Irish diaspora to build the exile brand.”
This vision aligns well with the ethos of the URC, which already features teams deeply connected to their national rugby ecosystems. London Irish, historically a home for Irish players in England, could solidify its role as an extension of the Irish rugby development pathway.
The club's potential move to the URC comes after an earlier takeover attempt by German investor Daniel Loitz collapsed. Loitz’s bid fell apart amid frustrations over the sale process, with Hokulani Limited, the group backing him, criticizing the administrators for what they described as an unpredictable and unstable negotiation process.
With new ownership now in place, the focus turns to securing a sustainable path back to competitive rugby. While London Irish’s return to the English Premiership remains uncertain, the URC represents a viable and exciting alternative, particularly given the club’s deep Irish roots.
For Ireland, a London Irish team in the URC could ease congestion within the provincial system, offering emerging talent a high-level competition platform while maintaining their connection to the national setup. If successful, it could mark a significant step forward for both the club and Irish rugby as a whole.
