Atlantic Hockey What To Watch: Penn State Women Chase AHA History

Penn State clinched its third consecutive AHA regular-season title last Friday with an overtime win over Mercyhurst, 4-3. Lyndie Lobdell scored 1:15 into extra frame, lifting the Nittany Lions to the win.

Penn State has won the regular-season crown four times since joining the conference in 2012-13, and the Nittany Lions have earned a first-round bye for the AHA playoffs – which begin on Feb. 22. The best-of-three semifinals start on Feb. 28 and Penn State has clinched home ice and the No. 1 seed.

However, they’re not done yet, and as the regular season hits its final weekend, the Nittany Lions have their eyes on AHA history. Penn State is 17-1-0 – the lone loss coming last Saturday – and their 17 wins are tied with the 2012-13 Mercyhurst team for the most in conference history, dating back to when the conference was known as College Hockey America.

Penn State (26-4-1) currently sits atop the AHA standings with 47 points – eight ahead of second-place Mercyhurst – and has dominated nearly every statistic in AHA play. That includes goals (68), goals against (22), shots per game (40.94), faceoff win percentage (.627) and penalty kill (88.4%) – among others.

PSU has also out-scored its opponents 117-50 overall and Jeff Kampersal’s lineup features five of the league’s top 10 point producers, and the AHA’s top goaltender in Katie DeSa. Their 26 wins are also the second-most in program history and PSU came in at No. 9 in both polls this week.

The Nittany Lions will look for AHA wins No. 18 and 19 this weekend at RIT. Game 1 is set for a 3 p.m. EST faceoff on Friday, followed by Saturday’s finale at 2 p.m. EST.

Here are some of the other top storylines this week in Atlantic Hockey.

Men’s Hockey

  • Sacred Heart and Holy Cross enter this weekend tied atop the AHA standings with 47 points, although the Crusaders have played two fewer games. Sacred Heart is off the weekend.
  • Holy Cross is currently riding a 14-game win streak in conference play, which is an Atlantic Hockey record. The Crusaders last AHA loss came on Nov. 16 and they’ll host Mercyhurst on Thursday and Friday.
  • Niagara junior Glebs Prohorenkovs had two goals and an assist Tuesday night as the Purple Eagles skated to a 6-2 win over Canisius. Trevor Hoskin also had two points (1-1-2) in the win and Pierce Charleson made 36 saves. Niagara is fourth in the AHA standings with 42 points.
  • Bentley goaltender Connor Hasley picked up two more shutouts last weekend, giving him seven on the season – which leads all NCAA goalies. Hasley recorded a 19-save shutout on Friday and made 28 saves on Saturday against Robert Morris.
  • Holy Cross forward John Gelatt, Bentley defenseman Nick Bochen, Hasley and Army freshman forward Jack Ivey were named the league’s respective Players of the Week on Monday.

Women’s Hockey

  • Penn State and Mercyhurst are locked in as the top two teams in the AHA standings. Third-place Syracuse has a six-point lead over RIT while Robert Morris and Lindenwood are tied for last with nine points each. RMU hosts Lindenwood this weekend.
  • Lindenwood forward Morgan Neitzke, RIT defenseman Kyla Bear, Syracuse goalie Allie Kelley and Mercyhurst freshman forward Julia Schalin were named the league’s respective Players of the Week.
  • Schalin carries a seven-game point streak into this weekend – putting up 10 points (3-7-10) in the stretch – and her 27 points rank second among all NCAA freshmen.
  • Mercyhurst goaltender Jorden Mattison made 33 saves against Penn State last Saturday, becoming the first AHA goaltender to hand PSU a loss this season. Mattison is 10-7-2 this season with a .932 save percentage and 1.82 GAA.
