125: #9 Luke Lilledahl, Penn State vs Tyler Garvin, Maryland
1st period: Two freshmen will start the dual. Lightening Luke will be the heavy favorite. Lilledahl wastes no time, shooting in and finishing for three in the first 15 seconds. After one minute Lilledahl goes option start and Garbin picks up a point for the escape. And a pancake from Lilledahl sends Garvin to his back and it's three plus four for nearfall and Lilledahl leads 10-1. Garvin fights off his back and gets to his base. He'll get another escape on the restart and it's 10-2 after less than two minutes of wrestling. Make that 13-2 after another takedown. And that's why the call him Lightening Luke! Will we see a first period tech? We will not, but Lilledahl maintains his 11 point lead and amasses a mountain of riding time.
2nd period. Option start again, make it 13-3. Lilledahl shoots Garvin out of bounds which gets Garvin dinged for stalling. Another takedown makes it 16-3. Escape and yet another takedown makes it 19-4 and now we get the tech-fall for Luke!

133: Kyison Garcia, Penn State vs #11 Braxton Brown, Maryland
1st period: It'll be Garcia again as Braeden Davis has the night off again. Davis didn't wrestle in the last two duals for PSU. First shot is from Garcia but Brown defends and nearly gets the takedown on the reattack but action is stalemated. Half way through the period, still 0-0. Very tactical first period so far, 30 seconds left and not much action. Brown takes a couple of half shots in short time but we hear the buzzer and it's 0-0, no stall calls either.
2nd period: Brown chooses down. He stands and tackles Garcia to the mat for a reversal and the first offensive points of the dual for the Terrapins. Now Garcia is in on Brown's legs and he may get a reversal. Brown eludes his grasp and it's one, not two for Garcia. 2-1 Brown leads by a point. More cautious wrestling for the rest of the period, which ends in neutral, still 2-1.
3rd period: Garcia goes underneath again. An escape would tie. Brown doesn't have a minute of riding time yet either. Garcia's first move off the whistle is stopped. And Brown gets a quick tilt for two near fall. Brown keeping the pressure on and gets more nearfall with a bow and arrow. 8-1 now and the match has swung completely in Brown's favor. Stall warning on Garcia. A rideout will give Brown the major. Short time now. No more nearfall for Brown or stall calls for Garcia but it's a major decision nonetheless for Braxton Brown!
133: Braxton Brown, Maryland over Kyison Garcia, Penn State, major decision 9-1
Penn State 5, Maryland 4
141: #3 Beau Bartlett, Penn State vs Dario Lemus, Maryland
1st period: PSU another super heavy favorite as the multiple time All-American and NCAA finalist Nittany Lion has a freshman from Maryland. Quick takedown for Bartlett and he's up 3-0 after barely a dozen seconds. Bartlett riding tough for about a minute before Lemus escapes to make it 3-1. Another attack from Bartlett, Lemus finds a leg to slow the attack, in the scramble Bartlett threads his leg between Lemus's and slaps in a two-on-one tilt and he's got three and swipes. The jonesey tilt variation is good for two nearfall and it's 8-1 in Bartlett's favor, still in the first. Bartlett gets the rideout and it's 8-1 with lots of riding time for Beau after 3 minutes.
2nd period: Bartlett elects to give bottom a try. He's out in under 15 seconds and it's 9-1. Head and arm for Beau, looking for a cement job. Lemus defends, still 9-1 half way through the period. Some hand fighting and a mini flurry but not a tone of action as we get to short time. And just before the buzzer it's a snap down go behind off an attack by Lemus and Bartlett makes it 12-1 just before the period ends.
3rd period: Lemus takes down, Bartlett goes option start. 12-2 for Bartlett, will need more than one takedown for the tech-fall. Another go-behind and then free release makes it 15-3. Now a takedown will end the match early. Getting close to the final minute mark. Bartlett still wearing the 2 different colored shoes by the way, one blue, one white. Lemus grabs one of those shoes and is threatening Bartlett but action is stalemated. 31 seconds left for the restart. Lemus trying to save that extra team point for the Terps. Riding time long since secured, and it's a 17-3 final for Bartlett!
141: Beau Bartlett, Penn State over Dario Lemus, Maryland, major decision 17-3

149: #3 Shayne Van Ness, Penn State vs #32 Kal Miller, Maryland
1st period: First ranked matchup of the night some in the fourth bout of the day. Miller in on a single lef early, Van Ness keeping him at bay. Whizzer stopping Miller below the knee and we get a stalemate. And close to the halfway mark on the period Van Ness darts in for the takedown and keeps a navy ride on Miller's legs for nearfall. Or no nearfall actually, Miller was able to sit up enough to avoid giving up swipes I assume. In any event, 3-0 for SVN. Now with a leg in and a chancery grip Van Ness gets four near fall. Miller escapes in the final 10 seconds to make it 7-1 before the first buzzer.
2nd period: Van Ness takes bottom and he's up and out quickly to make it 8-1. Stall warning on Miller. Halfway through the period another shot by Van Ness and he's threatening. Miller has a leg and the scramble is stalemated, still 8-1 with 30 seconds left in the period. Shot by Miller, counter by Van Ness, and time runs out before the sequence can play out.
3rd period: Miller chooses bottom for the final frame of regulation. SVN keeping Miller stuck to the mat. Another stall call makes it 9-1. Van Ness lets Miller up. Double leg straight to the back, takedown and more for Van Ness. Miller fighting for his life, Van Ness going for the kill. Very close to a fall. But Miller somehow stays off his back and avoids the pin. Add the nearfall and riding time though and it's a tech-fall for Shayne Van Ness!

157: #1 Tyler Kasak, Penn State vs #6 Ethen Miller, Maryland
1st period: The marquee bout of the dual! Two top ten undefeated wrestlers. One oh has got to go! Eye pole early on Kasak but he's okay and action resumes. Kasak drives Miller to the boundary but Miller circles back and they're on their feet in the center of the mat. Cautious feeling-out first two minutes, donuts on the scoreboard. Kasak arguably doing a little more than Miller but no scores or stall calls after three minutes.
2nd period: Kasak chooses down, and he breaks the bagels off the board and quickly escapes for the first point. Kasak shoots and the crowd wants a stall warning. They'll get it after Kasak's subsequent attack. One minute into the period and Miller shoots in deep. Miller has Kasak's leg in the air but Kasak kicks free and they're back in neutral, still 1-0. Looks like they bumped noggins and Kasak goes down holding his forehead. Totally unintentional by Miller. Kasak being attended do by the PSU coaches and medical staff. Kasak going into concussion protocol now. Unfortunately Kasak will injury default and Miller will get the win. Not sure why the fans would boo Miller as he gets his hand raised but Miller responds by asking for more. Unfortunate circumstances, hopefully Kasak will be okay and can return for the postseason. Injury default win for Miller.
157: Ethen Miller over Tyler Kasak, injury default
Penn State 14, Maryland 10
165: #1 Mitchell Mesenbrink, Penn State vs Alex Uryniak, Maryland
1st period: We return from the mid-point break as Penn State start to roll out their heavy hitters. Quick takedown for Mesenbrink who will be heavily favored to win by tech or pin. Releases by Mesenbrink at the one minute mark, violent snap down go behind and it's 6-1 with over half of the period to go. Mesenbrink trying to work an arm bar but Uryniak doesn't turn. It's taking all his effort to just remain on his stomach. They go out of bounds, Mesenrbink opts for a neutral restart. 6-2 with a minute left in the first. Uryniak shoots, Mesenbrink scores, 9-2. Uryniak dinged for stalling in short time. Roll-through cross-wrist tilt doesn't land. Uryniak nearly rolls through again or an escape but he doesn't free himself before the period ends, still 9-2. Riding time will be secured at some point for Mesenbrink but it's unlikely we'll see the match go seven minutes.
2nd period. Mesenrbink on bottom. Uryniak locks his hands so make it 10-2. Escape on the restart and it's 11-2. Takedown makes it 14-2 with 90 seconds left in the period. Stall with about a minute to go and it's 15-2. Mesenbrink comes out front to work an arm bar and potentially dangerous is called. Uryniak escapes on the restart, 15 seconds left in the period, and with a second left on the clock Mesenbrink gets a go-behind to secure the tech-fall!
165: Mitchell Mesenbrink, Penn State over Alex Uryniak, Maryland, tech-fall 18-2

174: #2 Levi Haines, Penn State vs Branson John, Maryland
1st period: PSU another favorite for an early-ended victory as two-time NCAA finalist and 2024 champ Levi Haines takes the mat. John managed to slow down Haines's offensive, at least for the first two minutes. No scores or stall calls. In short time now, same deal. Bagels on the scoreboard as the buzzer sounds.
2nd period: John takes bottom. We get a minute of mat wrestling and still no points or stall calls, although Haines now has over a minute of riding time. John broken down flat and I'm surprised we haven't gotten a stall call yet. And there it is, with about 30 seconds left in the period and a stall for John. Haines also picks up a stall warning as he was perhaps doing too much parallel riding. John to his feet in short time but Haines will get the ride out, still 0-0 going into the third.
3rd period: Haines gets a turn on bottom. Haines escapes in about 10 seconds so he'll have an escape point and the RT point all but secured. John shoots in and he's got a single leg. Haines defending. Haines frees himself from danger and attacks John's leg. It'll be 4-0 as Haines completes the TD. Final minute of regulation. John escapes for his first point. He'll need more than a takedown to tie things due to the riding time point. But Haines moots that calculation with another takedown to make it 7-1. Make it an 8-1 regular decision and looks like I underestimated Branson John by saying this match would likely end in a tech or pinfall.
174: Levi Haines, Penn State over Branson John, Maryland, decision 8-1
Penn State 22, Maryland 10
184: #1 Carter Starocci, Penn State vs #10 Jaxon Smith, Maryland
1st period: Four-time NCAA champ Carter Starocci is another heavy favorite but I'll refrain from making any predictions after the last match. Also because Jaxon Smith is a fellow top-ten nationally ranked wrestler. Starocci in on a single leg early and he finishes quickly for a 3-0 lead before 30 seconds have transpired. Smith able to stay in his base but not do much else. Starocci cuts him loose after about 100 seconds of riding time. Double leg from Starocci but he runs out of real estate. Still gave Smith a bombing but no harm nor foul. One minute to go in the period, 3-1 lead for Carter. Bear hug for Starocci but once again Starocci runs out of room for the takedown. There was enough room for the next shot, however, as Starocci runs the score up to 6-1. He'll get the rideout as we go to the second period.
2nd period: Carter takes a turn on bottom. Quick escape. Shot by Smith runs into a stonewall in the form of Carter Starocci, who then counters by grabbing a single. Starocci drags Smith towards the center but once again the out of bounds area saves Smith from giving up more points. Starocci keps the pressure on. Stall warning for Smith, then a takedown and it's 11-1. Optional start makes it 11-2 with 30 to go in the period. He'll get another takedown with 21 seconds left on the clock. 14-2 Carter. Another short-time ride out and we head to the third.
3rd period: Smith chooses bottom. Carter rides for a little bit to officially lock up riding time, though it was never really in doubt. He's going to try and get some nearfall to complete the tech-fall but Smith not giving up. He does get hit for stalling as Starocci lets him, but no escape as Starocci is back in on a double that nearly sends them both through the first row of spectators. Escape on the restart makes it 15-3. Smith threatening Starocci now in the scramble but Starocci too strong. They go out of bounds and another stall for Smith and it's two points now for Starocci, 17-3. Next stall is a DQ for Smith. Starocci will get another takedown though to make it 20-3 and a top-ten technical fall for Carter!

197: #4 Josh Barr, Penn State vs Chase Mielnik, Maryland
1st period: Barr attacking early, Mielnik defends, they go out of bounds. Barr attacks again on the restart and clean finish this time for the first takedown of the bout. Mielnik unable to do much from bottom but Barr isn't getting nearfall either so Barr cuts him loose with about a minute left in the period. Now Mielnik in on a leg but Barr with a vicious sprawl and he gets the go-behind to make it 6-1 in short time. Barr rides out the rest of the period.
2nd period: Barr gives bottom a try. He gets a quick escape and then shoots Mielnik out of bounds. No TD but it's 7-1. Next attack from Barr nets him another three, 10-1 with over a minute to go in the period. Barr cuts Mielnik loose. Barr in on another shot, Mielnik dives for a leg, there's a scramble on the edge, Barr has Mielnik on his back. Close to a fall but it will be nearfall instead. And Barr points to the scoreboard as the refs didn't realize that makes it a tech and now they blow the whistle. 17-2 early stoppage for Barr!

285: #2 Greg Kerkvliet, Penn State vs #12 Seth Nevills, Maryland
1st period: Another ranked matchup but also another heavy favorite for the Nittany Lions. And the final bout of the day is underway! Both wrestlers in their final year of eligibility. Nevills started his career at Penn State, Kerkvliet started his at Ohio State. A couple of nice flurries but no scores halfway through the period. Kerkvliet finally breaks the egg on the scoreboard with a takedown with 30 seconds left in the period. He'll ride out the period.
2nd period: Kerkvliet takes bottom, stands and then hip heists out of Nevills's clutches to make it 4-0. Blast double thunders Nevills to the mat and the crowd loves it. Nevills cut loose and it's 7-2. That's how the period ends.
3rd period: Nevills takes bottom. He's out to narrow the lead to four, it's 7-3 in favor of Kerkvliet. Still in neutral with a minute to go. Kerkvliet has riding time secured so effectively a five point lead. A takedown and ride out will give him the major. 30 seconds left. Nevills attacking for the rest of the period but we'll end the bout with a decision as bonus points elude Kerkvliet. Greg stays undefeated on the season and the match ends with a dominant decision for the Nittany Lions!

You can put another victory in the books for Coach Sanderson and the Penn State Nittany Lions! Everything went pretty much according to script except for Tyler Kasak's injury default. Once again really hope he'll be okay and ready for the postseason, along with Braeden Davis while we're on the subject.
A lopsided victory but some tough performances by the Terps as well, especially at 174 as Branson John held Levi Haines to a decision.
Thanks for spending some time on Super Bowl Sunday reading a college wrestling live-blog! Apologies for the typos and see you next time!
