Italy Vs. Wales Rugby Live Updates And Scores From Guinness Six Nations

Italy is aiming to make history in Rome, seeking back-to-back victories over Wales for the first time.

After years of struggles against the Welsh, the Azzurri have won two of the last three meetings, both in Cardiff.

However, they have not beaten Wales on home soil since 2007, losing their last eight encounters in Italy.

With their hard-fought win over Scotland last year breaking a 26-match home losing streak in the Six Nations, Gonzalo Quesada’s side now has the chance to build momentum. Victory would mark another crucial step forward for an improving Italian squad.

For Wales, the stakes could not be higher.

A 14th straight defeat would equal the team's longest losing streak in the championship’s history, dating back to the mid-1990s.

A 43-0 thrashing by France in Round 1 was a brutal reality check, marking the squad's heaviest Six Nations defeat in over two decades.

The Welsh have not won since last year’s World Cup, and another loss would deepen the crisis.

Warren Gatland’s men know they must find a way to regain their edge, but against an Italy side growing in confidence, it will take a monumental effort to turn the fortunes around.

Full-Time Report

Italy held off a late Welsh surge to secure a 22-15 victory at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, marking back-to-back home wins for Gonzalo Quesada’s side and extending Wales’ losing streak to 14 matches.

The Azzurri took control early, with fullback Tommaso Allan’s precise kicking proving pivotal in wet conditions. He opened the scoring with a fifth-minute penalty, before Ben Thomas equalized for Wales.

Italy then pulled away when Ange Capuozzo latched onto a pinpoint Paolo Garbisi kick for the game’s first try in the 19th minute, with Allan converting. The fullback added two more penalties before halftime, giving Italy a commanding 16-3 lead.

Wales struggled to establish attacking momentum, with errors and missed opportunities hampering the efforts. The visitors finally responded in the 69th minute when Aaron Wainwright powered over from a maul, though Dan Edwards’ conversion attempt struck the upright.

Allan’s 73rd-minute penalty extended Italy’s lead to 22-8 before a late penalty try, awarded in the 78th minute following repeated Italian infringements, gave Wales hope. However, despite a nervy final minute, Italy held on for its first home win over Wales at the Olimpico.

The loss adds to Wales’ woes under Warren Gatland, leaving them winless in its last 14 matches. This loss means Georgia will overtake Wales on the World Rugby rankings for the first time in history.

Full-Time! Italy Wins!

That was far tighter for the home side than it needed to be, but they have done it!

Finally, Italy has beaten Wales at the Stadio Olimpico, and crucially, that is back-to-back home wins for Gonzalo Quesada's side.

Is this the lowest point in Welsh Rugby history?

Wales looked clueless for the first 70 minutes, but it must be said that Dan Edwards and Aaron Wainwright made a brilliant impact from the bench. That is 14 losses on the bounce for Warren Gatland's side.

Try - Penalty Try Wales - Min 78

Italy has just been given a second yellow card for repeated infringements, and Wales is rewarded with the full seven points to set up a nervous final 90 seconds for the home side. ITA 22 - WAL 15.

Yellow Card - Marco Riccioni - Min 77

Italy is down a player, as replacement tighthead Marco Riccioni is given his marching orders following an accumulation of penalties.

Penalty - Tommaso Allan - Min 73

The hosts calm things down a little with another Allan penalty following a Taulupe Faletau concession, where he played the nine around a maul. That was the fullback's last involvement, as he trots off the park. ITA 22 - WAL 8.

Try - Aaron Wainwright - Min 69

Finally! The Welsh have landed a shot through a well-set maul, with Aaron Wainwright touching down.

Edwards's conversion bounces off the upright, so it is just the five points for Wales, but crucially, the Welsh have a pulse. ITA 19 - WAL 8.

No Try - Freddie Thomas - Min 68

That's more like it from Wales, which goes to the corner through a superb kick from Edwards.

From here the Welsh set up a good maul, and Thomas gets over but is adjudged to have had a double movement.

Wales gets a penalty and will go to the corner again. Adding to the good fortune, Josh Adams is back on the park following his yellow card.

Penalty - Tommaso Allan - Min 60

Back on track!

Following three missed attempts, Italy is quickly getting out of view for the visitors. ITA 19 - WAL 3.

Yellow Card - Josh Adams - Min 59

Wales is firmly going off the boil here, as Josh Adams clatters into Paolo Garbisi, which has forced the fly-half off the pitch. The yellow card is on review, so it could well be upgraded up to a red, as it was a nasty collision from a high kick.

Missed Penalty - Martin Page-Relo - Min 58

Italy calls upon its long-range kicker in scrumhalf Martin Page-Relo, who comes up just a few inches short from inside his own half.

Missed Penalty - Tommaso Allan - Min 54

Allan has missed another penalty, but to be fair to the fullback, this one was from near the halfway line on the angle. Still, it shows where the Azzurri's heads are - they will take every opportunity that comes their way.

Missed Penalty - Tommaso Allan - Min 51

Methodical, unlike any Italian side that has gone before it, Gonzalo Quesada's men are taking every opportunity that comes their way. Unfortunately for the home side, Allan has missed arguably his easiest shot at goal following a scrum penalty. ITA 16 - WAL 3.

Fly-Half Switch

Dan Edwards comes on to earn his second test cap. Could this be the catalyst to get Wales playing with some direction?

Second-Half Kickoff

Paolo Grabisi gets us back underway here in Rome. Interestingly, Welsh attack coach Rob Howley was talking to replacement fly-half Dan Edwards, who likely will come onto the pitch imminently.

Halftime Report

Italy holds a commanding 16-3 lead over Wales at halftime in a rain-soaked Stadio Olimpico, with Tommaso Allan’s precision from the tee punishing a lackluster Welsh performance.

The hosts struck first through Allan’s early penalty, but Ben Thomas responded in kind to level the scores at 3-3.

Italy then seized momentum, as Ange Capuozzo capitalized on a pinpoint Paolo Garbisi kick to score the game’s only try in the 19th minute, with Allan adding the extras.

The Italian fly-half continued his fine form, slotting two more penalties to extend the lead.

Wales has struggled to build any attacking rhythm, with Josh Adams twice failing to control opportunities created by Tomos Williams. A misfiring line-out and unforced errors have compounded their frustrations.

With 40 minutes to turn it around, Warren Gatland’s side faces an uphill battle to avoid another disappointing result.

HT: Italy 16, Wales 3

So Close Again For Josh Adams!

Once again, Tomos Williams finds space in behind the Italian defense, but Adams can't control the ball once again.

The Welsh attack looks rudderless, with players overrunning one another and generally looking clunky. Wales then tries a fancy line-out play, only to run into touch.

Penalty - Tommaso Allan - Min 32

Another silly penalty concession by Wales, which is not at the races at all. Evan Lloyd goes off his feet, as Jac Morgan appeared to be winning a turnover... Allan makes no mistake from straight in front. ITA 16 - WAL 3.

Penalty - Tommaso Allan - Min 28

Italy is starting to pull away here, as Allan slots another textbook penalty in what are very tough conditions.

Absolutely superb from the fullback, who looks to be back to his best in the blue jersey. ITA 13 - WAL 3.

Inches Short

Italy has started to get a territory foothold in this contest but has struggled to make any real in-roads into the Welsh defense.

Taking it upon himself to nudge his team in front, fly-half Paolo Garbisi goes for a drop goal, which was inches short from 40 meters out.

Try - Ange Capuozzo - Min 19

Toulouse superstar Ange Capuozzo pounces on a clever kick down the blindside from Paolo Garbisi, who didn't look convinced that his teammate got the ball down. But the try is awarded, and Allan converts! ITA 10 - WAL 3.

Penalty - Ben Thomas - Min 15

Both teams have been pretty tense so far, with a clear tactic from the Welsh to go aerial, and it is paying dividends.

The visitors have been camped in the Italian half and have won a penalty, which Ben Thomas nails! ITA 3 - WAL 3.

Penalty - Tommaso Allan - Min 5

Welsh lock Freddie Thomas is caught offsides, as Wales goes piling into a breakdown.

Tommaso Allan has picked up right where he left off in Murrayfield to drill a penalty from 45 meters out.

Italy takes the first lead of the match. ITA 3 - WAL 0.

Just Inches Away!

Incredible vision from Tomos Williams, who oh so nearly sets up Josh Adams for the opening try of the match, but the wet ball just evades the veteran winger.

From the ensuing scrum, Italy wins a penalty and clears its lines.

Kickoff!

Ben Thomas gets us underway! The tension is palpable, with this one being a true must-win for both sides.

Incredible National Anthems

There are few anthems that quite hit, like Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and Il Canto degli Italiani!

What an incredible rendition we have just been treated to!

As the rain teems down, a dramatic stage has been set for arguably the biggest match of the season for these two teams.

No Backing Down

Expect a battle of resilience, with both teams among the Six Nations’ top tacklers in Week 1. Italy made 212 tackles, and Wales 185.

Flanker Sebastian Negri led the Azzurri’s defensive charge with 26 tackles, second only to captain Michele Lamaro’s record-breaking 27 last year.

Italy’s physicality will be key, as the squad looks to dominate Wales up front, especially in wet conditions.

Meanwhile, the visitors must rediscover their attacking rhythm after being completely shut out by France.

With history and form on its side, Italy will be confident, but Wales is desperate - and desperation sometimes can be the ultimate motivator.
