The No. 12 Florida State softball team picked up an 8-0 redemption win over No. 4 Oklahoma State on Saturday to close out the first of two weekends at the 2025 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.

The contest was many things – a statement/signature victory over a top-5 team, a bounce-back triumph after losing to the Cowgirls in the first game of the event and possibly, though its early, a NCAA Women’s College World Series preview.

Florida State’s starting pitcher was senior Annabelle Widra, who retired the first 11 Cowgirls she faced, before giving up a pair of two-out singles in the fourth inning. Those were the only two hits for OSU in the contest at Nancy Almaraz Stadium in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Widra (1-0) went four innings and picked up the victory. She faced 14 batters and recorded one strikeout. That means the FSU defense also was top-notch on the way to the win.

Offensively, Florida State racked up seven hits, with sophomore Isa Torres, sophomore Kennedy Harp and redshirt senior Jahni Kerr collecting two apiece.

Harp broke open the game with a three-run triple in the third inning, while Torres’ single to the wall in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Seminoles the run-rule victory and the rest of the night off.

Sophomore Katie Kutz took the loss for Oklahoma State. She pitched three innings, giving up two hits and three runs, while walking four and striking out one. The rest of the damage was done against RyLee Crandall, who got touched for five hits and five runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Saturday’s contest between OSU and Florida State was the ninth game of the weekend overall and second meeting between the two top-15 teams.

In the first game of this year’s Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, also the first game of the 2025 season for both programs, Oklahoma State defeated the Seminoles 9-6.

FSU rallied with victories over Northern Colorado (7-1) and Louisiana Tech (6-3 and 9-1) and then capped the 4-1start to the new campaign with the shutout against OSU.

The story was the opposite for the Cowgirls, who were upset Friday by Louisiana Tech (6-1), downed Northern Colorado (8-0) later in the day and then ended the trip to Mexico with the loss to FSU on Saturday. OSU is 2-2 to start the season.

Two years ago, OSU and FSU both made the WCWS, with FSU finishing as the runner-up to Oklahoma. That’s something OSU is very familiar with, having been on the receiving end of OU (and Texas) beatings in the Big 12 for many years.

Now, Oklahoma State is the front-runner in the Big 12 and looking to be among the final eight teams in Division I softball for the sixth straight year. Florida State is setting out hoping to avoid missing the WCWS in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2014.

The Puerto Vallarta College Challenge is taking place across two weekends – Feb. 6-9 and Feb. 13-16 – with all games being played at the famed Nancy Almaraz Stadium. All of the games are being broadcast live on FloSoftball.

The first session of the event included Florida State, Louisiana Tech, Northern Colorado and Oklahoma State.

The second week of action will feature Boise State, BYU, Florida International, Illinois State, Indiana and North Dakota State.

About Florida State Softball

The Seminoles were 46-16 last season, which included a 19-5 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play and finishing in second place behind Duke in the regular-season standings. FSU was the runner-up to Duke at the ACC Softball Championship, too.

A year after finishing as the national runner-up to Oklahoma, Florida State failed to make it to the WCWS in 2024. FSU’s 2024 season ended with consecutive losses to OU in the Norman Super Regional.

There’s optimism for FSU as the new season gets underway, however, as since 2014, the Seminoles have not had back-to-back seasons where they did not advance to the WCWS.

Entering the new campaign, Florida State landed at No. 12 on the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and at No. 2 on the 2025 ACC Softball Preseason Poll, earning four first-place votes. Duke topped the ACC rankings and comes in at No. 8 on the national poll.

This trip to Mexico marks the first time the Seminoles are playing outside of the United States.

The last time FSU started a season away from home was 2018 – also the last time the Seminoles were softball national champions.

Welcome To Mexico, Florida State Softball

The Florida State softball team has arrived in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and is ready for action.

About Oklahoma State Softball

This year marks 50 seasons of Oklahoma State softball, and the Cowgirls still are searching for their first national title.

Oklahoma State enters the new season as the front-runner in the new-look Big 12, which is without longtime powerhouses Oklahoma and Texas. They moved to the Southeastern Conference, and OSU was chosen by the Big 12 coaches as the preseason No. 1.

Oklahoma State, as it emerges from the OU/Texas shadows, landed at No. 4 on the recently released ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25.

Last year, Oklahoma State finished 49-12 overall and 21-6 in Big 12 play, which was good for third place behind Texas and Oklahoma, respectively. OSU’s season ended at the WCWS with consecutive losses to Florida and Stanford.

Two-thirds of the OSU roster is back to see if the team can improve on last year’s 49 wins.

The only other time the Cowgirls participated in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge was 2023, when two players (Lexi Kilfoyl and Tallen Edwards) received all-tournament honors, and pitcher Kelly Maxwell won a share of the event’s MVP award.

OSU was 3-1 at the event in 2023.

All-time against Florida State, the Cowgirls are 15-13, including an 8-7 advantage at neutral sites. The last time they met was an 8-0 win for FSU during the 2023 WCWS.

Oklahoma State Transfers RyLee Crandall And Ruby Meylan Expected To Make Impact In 2025

Pitcher RyLee Crandall heads to Oklahoma State from Baylor, and fellow hurler Ruby Meylan made the move from Washington. Both are expected to make a huge impact for the Cowgirls in 2025.
