After a tough loss to begin its 2025 season, the Florida State softball team picked up its first win of the new campaign, a 7-1 victory over Northern Colorado at the 2025 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The Seminoles wasted no time against the Bears, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings at Nancy Almaraz Stadium, and that proved to be enough for freshman phenom Jazzy Francik, who earned the win in her first career start in the circle for FSU.

Francik (1-0) pitched six innings, giving up eight hits and one run, while striking out four and walking one. Senior Annabelle Widra tossed the final inning for FSU and held the Bears scoreless for the sixth time in seven innings.

Sophomore outfielder Kennedy Harp led the way for the Florida State offense, collecting four hits in four appearances at the plate. She also had three RBIs and a stolen base in the game.

Florida State, ranked No. 12 to start the season, now is 1-1 on the year. The team's season opener was a 9-6 loss to No. 4 Oklahoma State in Puerto Vallarta on Thursday morning.

Up next for Florida State will be a Friday afternoon matchup with Louisiana Tech.

Northern Colorado, the reigning Big Sky Conference champion, was playing in its first game of the year and will have a shot at redemption Thursday afternoon against Louisiana Tech.

Junior utility Ella Gonzales had three of Northern Colorado's nine hits against Florida State, as she went 3 for 4 with an RBI. The lone run for the Bears came in the third inning on a Gonzales single.

Senior Isabelle Dinapoli (0-1) pitched the complete game for UNC, giving up seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits. She had three strikeouts, three walks, two wild pitchers and one hit batter.

The Puerto Vallarta College Challenge is taking place across two weekends – Feb. 6-9 and Feb. 13-16 – with all games being played at the famed Nancy Almaraz Stadium. All of the games will be broadcast live on FloSoftball.

The first session of the event includes Florida State, Louisiana Tech, Northern Colorado and Oklahoma State.

The second week of action will feature Boise State, BYU, Florida International, Illinois State, Indiana and North Dakota State.

Florida State Opened 2025 Season Against Oklahoma State

The Seminoles kicked off their 2025 season Thursday morning against Oklahoma State. It didn't start off amazingly for FSU, but here's a sweet highlight.

About Florida State Softball

Florida State was 46-16 last season, which included a 19-5 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play and finishing in second place behind Duke in the regular-season standings. FSU was the runner-up to Duke at the ACC Softball Championship, too.

Entering the 2025 season, Florida State landed at No. 12 on the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and at No. 2 on the 2025 ACC Softball Preseason Poll, earning four first-place votes. Duke topped the ACC rankings and comes in at No. 8 on the national poll.

This trip to Mexico marks the first time the Seminoles are playing outside of the United States.

The last time FSU started a season away from home was 2018 – also the last time the Seminoles were softball national champions.

About Northern Colorado Softball

Northern Colorado returns an experienced team that features 16 players from the 2024 roster, including eight starters and two starting pitchers.

The Bears were 27-26 overall in 2024, but their 9-5 effort in conference play was enough to secure the regular-season title in the six-team Big Sky Conference. They also went on to take the title at the Big Sky Tournament, marking the second consecutive Northern Colorado sweep.

UNC had a quick exit from the 2024 NCAA Division Softball Championship, however, losing to Oklahoma State and Michigan in the regional round of play.

Northern Colorado’s continued success earned the Bears the No. 1 spot in the Big Sky’s recent 2025 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, where they garnered three of the six first-place votes.
