Since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Marcus Smith has been England’s preferred No. 10, but head coach Steve Borthwick reportedly is weighing a tactical switch that would allow Fin Smith, the Northampton fly-half, to make his first test start.
The move could provide England with additional creativity, as the team looks to bounce back from a 27-22 loss to Ireland in the tournament opener.
Henry Slade, set to partner in the midfield, praised Fin Smith’s tactical awareness and ability to control the game.
"Fin sees space really well," Slade said. "There is always going to be space on the field somewhere; you can’t defend everything, and he sees it really well. Obviously, he is a slightly different 10 to Marcus.
"Marcus has got that X-factor in terms of beating a man one-on-one, but Fin is very measured. He speaks very well. A big part of a No. 10’s role is moving the team around to where they need to be on the pitch, and he has been really good at that."
Marcus Smith, who previously has featured at fullback in cameo roles, would provide an attacking threat from the backfield, if the selection change is confirmed.
However, this tactical reshuffle would mean dropping Freddie Steward, England’s dependable fullback known for his aerial dominance and defensive reliability. Attack coach Richard Wigglesworth acknowledged the dilemma.
“Marcus is obviously another set of eyes that are very opportunistic — ‘Where’s the space? Who can I beat?’” Wigglesworth said. “But Freddie Steward brings an incredible level of high-ball skill and a kick return that is incredibly decisive. There are competing demands that you are trading off all the time.”
While Marcus Smith's dynamism could unlock England’s attack, Steward’s absence would leave a notable gap in defensive security and territorial play. The balancing act between flair and structure will be a key decision for Borthwick and his coaching staff.
England is desperate for a victory to keep its Six Nations hopes alive. With a potential shake-up in the backline, the decision to start Fin Smith at fly-half could signal a shift in England’s attacking philosophy, banking on two playmakers to challenge a formidable French side.
As anticipation builds ahead of the Twickenham showdown, all eyes will be on England’s team announcement to see if the Smith duo will take center stage in what could be a defining moment for the team’s campaign.
