One of the world’s best professional rugby leagues returns Feb. 14 for the 2025 season, as the new Super Rugby campaign begins. 

Super Rugby, armed with a new schedule format, played its first season in 1996 when SANZAR was formed and now features 11 teams from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and other Pacific Islands.

Loaded with All Blacks and Wallabies on the rosters throughout the league, Super Rugby joins the likes of the United Rugby Championship, Top 14 and the Premiership as one of the world’s best rugby competitions. 

This year, the league plays its first matches on Valentine's Day, and that includes the Highlanders.

What Was The Highlanders' Super Rugby Record in 2024?

The Highlanders advanced to the Super Rugby playoffs in 2024 with a 6-0-8 record, but their postseason run was short-lived, as the club lost to the Brumbies 32-16 in the quarterfinals. 

The Highlanders, led by start Ethan de Groot, the only All Black on the roster, didn't qualify for the playoffs in 2023, so in some respects, the year was a nice bounce-back campaign for the club from Dunedin, New Zealand. 

How Many Times Have The Highlanders Won The Super Rugby Championship?

The Highlanders won the 2015 Super Rugby final, defeating the Hurricanes. It was the first time they made the postseason since 2002. They have not been back to the final since. 

How Many All Blacks Are On The Highlanders ?

De Groot is the only player on the Highlanders roster who played for the All Blacks in 2024. 

Who Coaches The Highlanders?

Jamie Joseph is the head coach of the Highlanders. 

He is the former Japan national team head coach (2016-2023) and became the head coach of the Highlanders for the second time in 2024. 

He went 101-54 from 2011-2016 in his first stint as the head coach and takes over for Clarke Dermody, who was the interim coach last season.

The Highlanders play in Dunedin, New Zealand, on the South Island. 

The name "Highlanders" comes from the rich Scottish history of the city of Dunedin, which is located in the Otago region. Dunedin is the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh.
