Big Ten Teams Playing In The 2025 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge
Big Ten Teams Playing In The 2025 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge
Of the 17 softball teams in the Big Ten Conference, one will be part of the action at the 2025 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in February – Indiana.

While the 2025 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge will include 10 premier softball programs, only one hails from the ever-growing Big Ten Conference – Indiana.
The event will take place across two weekends – Feb. 6-9 and Feb. 13-16 – with all games being played at the famed Nancy Almaraz Stadium in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
All of the games will be broadcast live on FloSoftball.

The first session of the 2025 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge will include Florida State, Louisiana Tech, Northern Colorado and Oklahoma State.
Indiana will head to the Pacific coast of Mexico for the second week of action and will be joined by Boise State, BYU, Florida International, Illinois State and North Dakota State.
The Hoosiers are coming off a 40-20 season that included a 12-11 mark in Big Ten play, resulting in a middle-of-the-pack finish in the then-14-team conference standings.
Despite the mediocre performance in the regular season, Indiana reached the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament, where the Hoosiers lost to Michigan, 3-1.
The late surge was enough to earn Indiana a spot in the 2024 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, but that’s where the momentum ended. The Hoosiers lost consecutive games in the double-elimination regional round, falling to Washington and Missouri, to see their season come to an abrupt end.
Indiana’s 2024 schedule did not include a trip to Puerto Vallarta.
At the 2025 event, the Hoosiers will face North Dakota State (Feb. 13), Illinois State (Feb. 14), Boise State (Feb. 14) and BYU (Feb. 15).

Indiana Softball In 2025
Though Indiana was not one of the Big Ten squads ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball College Top 25 Poll, the Hoosiers were among the teams receiving votes.
The Big Ten teams that did make the top 25 were UCLA (6), Nebraska (16), Northwestern (20), Michigan (T22) and Oregon (T24). Others receiving votes with Indiana were Penn State and Washington.
For 2025, the conference got a few new schools, expanding to 18 (17 for softball) with the announcement coming in early August 2024. The newcomers are Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington. USC does not have a softball program.
Where Are The Other Top Big Ten Teams Starting The 2025 Season?
Along with the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, there are many other early-season tournaments and invitationals that allow teams to see parts of the country and opposition they won’t face during the regular season.
UCLA Softball
The No. 5 UCLA Bruins will kick off their season Feb. 6 at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles, and that will be one of five classic/invitational events on the front end of the UCLA schedule that will allow the Bruins to test themselves against many of the nation’s top teams.
The series of events will take UCLA from coast to coast. The slate includes the Mark Campbell Invitational (Irvine, California), Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational (Clearwater, Florida), the prestigious Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (Cathedral City, California) and the Judi Garman Classic (Fullerton, California).
UCLA was one of the eight teams to reach the Women’s College World Series last year.
The Bruins finished the 2024 season at 43-12 overall and 17-4 in conference play, which helped them win the conference title based on their .810 winning percentage. They also won the conference tournament.
Nebraska Softball
No. 19 Nebraska also will get the 2025 season going on Feb. 6 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida.
The Huskers then will head west, stopping in Las Cruces, New Mexico, for the Troy Cox Classic and Cathedral City for the Mary Nutter College Classic.
As March begins, the Huskers will work their way back to the Midwest, stopping in Wichita, Kansas, for the Wichita State Tournament, before hosting the Big Red Spring Fling.
In 2024, the Huskers were 30-23 overall and 12-9 in Big Ten action. They finished fourth in the conference standings.
Washington Softball
No. 22 Washington begins its inaugural Big Ten softball season Feb. 7 against SEC powerhouse Alabama at the Candrea Classic in Tucson, Arizona. The stint in Arizona also will bring the Huskies to the Littlewood Classic in the Phoenix area.
The next stop for Washington will be the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in California, which continues to be the ultimate way for teams to gauge themselves early in the season.
Washington will play five games at the Mary Nutter and a one-off contest with CSUN, before venturing off to the OUTRIGGER Invitational in Honolulu and the Black and Orange Classic in Pocatello, Idaho.
The Huskies previously played in the Pac-12. They were 32-15 overall in 2024 and 13-10 in conference play, tying for third place in the Pac-12.
Oregon Softball
Fellow Big Ten newcomer Oregon will begin its 2025 campaign Feb. 7 at the UNLV Desert Classic in Las Vegas, followed by the Littlewood Classic in the Phoenix area and the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on the West Coast.
After testing themselves against the challenging Mary Nutter field, the No. 23 Ducks will return home to Eugene, Oregon, for the Oregon Classic and the Jane Sanders Classic.
Oregon previously played in the Pac-12. The ducks were 30-21 overall in 2024 and 13-10 in conference play, which left them tied for third in the Pac-12 standings.
