Now expected to participate in the AHL All-Star Classic Feb. 2-3 are Rochester Americans forward Brett Murray, Milwaukee Admirals forward Joakim Kemell, Rockford IceHogs defenseman Kevin Korchinski, Iowa Wild forward Brendan Gaunce, and Henderson Silver Knights forward Grigori Denisenko.
The new All-Stars will be replacing Cleveland Monsters forward Luca Del Bel Belluz, Iowa Wild forward Liam Ohgren, Milwaukee Admirals forward Vincent Hinostroza, Texas Stars defenseman Lian Bichsel and Henderson Silver Knights forward Tanner Laczynski.
The initial roster, which was announced Jan. 8 has seen 11 changes to date – many because players have secured longer-term call-ups to their NHL teams, which is obviously a good reason to have to miss the event. There may yet be a few more before the AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, a number of new players are getting the opportunity to showcase their talents.
Murray is on pace for his most productive season as a pro with the Americans. He has 33 points through 40 games including 18 goals. He will join teammates Isak Rosén and Devon Levi in the midseason showcase.
Kemell is in his second full season in North America after making the jump late in the 2022-23 season. He has 23 points in 37 games, but has played some of his best hockey in the AHL during the Calder Cup Playoffs with 21 points in 29 career postseason contests.
Korchinski is in the AHL this season after playing the full 2023-24 campaign in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 20-year-old has been making the most of his opportunity to reset with Rockford, posting 17 points in 31 games.
Gaunce is in the midst of his most productive season to date in his AHL career. The 30-year-old has played 182 games in the NHL and 372 in the AHL. With Iowa this season, he’s posted 23 points in 29 games.
Denisenko crossed 200 games played in the AHL this season and has been one of the more skilled players in the league over his time there. He has 24 points in 37 games for Henderson. Last season, he set a career high with 56 points in 65 games with the Silver Knights.
