1. The Women's 800m
You're not going to want to miss the women's 800m competition on Friday.
Why not? Well, it may very well be the most stacked race of the entire weekend.
Featuring more than a dozen sub-2:01-seeded performers and an Olympic finalist, fans will be treated to a fast showing on Friday afternoon.
Stanford's Juliette Whittaker, Paris Olympic finalist in the 800m and 2024 NCAA indoor and outdoor champion, will headline the field. Coming off a phenomenal year that included a booked trip to Paris in the 800m for Team USA, Whittaker returns to the collegiate scene as the top dog.
She set a 1:57.76 personal best in the semifinals in the 800m at the Paris Olympics, and would go on to take seventh in the final. Now, Whittaker returns to the indoor oval where she holds a 1:59.53 PR, which she ran en route to a win at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Whittaker will be joined by Stanford teammate Roisin Willis on the line this weekend. Willis won the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championship as a freshman in 1:59.93 and took second at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Already this season, Willis has thrown down a stellar 600m effort, clocking 1:25.74 at the UW Preview.
Other collegians to keep an eye on include Meghan Hunter of BYU, who placed third at NCAA indoors last year, and Harvard's Sophia Gorriaran, who made the 800m finals at NCAAs last June. Makayla Paige of North Carolina will also be an athlete to watch with a personal best of 2:00.97.
And once you add the pros into the mix, the race gets even more exciting. European Championship bronze medalist Bourgoin Anais, U.S. Olympic Trials 800m semifinalist Sammy Watson and former Oklahoma State standout Gabija Galvydyte are all names to look out for. In total, 13 athletes are seeded under 2:01, which should make for a very entertaining race.
2. The Men's Mile
Could we see a 3:49 or faster mile this weekend at Boston?
For some athletes, that may very likely be the goal. Looking to pace at 3:50 or under in heat one, the men's mile at the BU Terrier Classic could prove to be a barnburner.
Defending meet champion Colin Sahlman of NAU returns this year hoping to best his quick 3:53.17 winning mark from 2024. Since then, Sahlman has continued to find success on the track, finishing sixth in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships and fourth in the 1,500m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
He has already opened up his 2025 indoor season with some impressive PRs at shorter distances -- 48.63 for 400m and 1:17.24 in the 600m.
But he won't be the only notable collegian leading the field. North Carolina's Ethan Strand, who set the men's indoor 3k collegiate record at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville opener in December, will also be one to watch. He certainly has speed, evident by his 3:35.60 outdoor 1,500m personal best and 3:54.62 indoor mile PR.
Plus, there will be plenty of fast pros in the field. Robert Farken of OAC enters the race with a 3:32.10 1,500m personal best, as well as Frenchman Flavien Szot, who ran 3:34.53 over 1,500 meters last summer. Bowerman Track Club's Kieran Tuntivate and New Zealand 1,500m record holder Sam Tanner will also be athletes to watch in the fast heat.
Meanwhile, there may be another race developing within the race at BU -- the chase for sub-4:00. How many men can dip under the elusive four-minute barrier at this year's BU John Thomas Terrier Classic?
The Boston University Track and Tennis Center is known as one of the fastest tracks for distance runners for a reason. For example, in 2024, 20 athletes in the men's mile ran below four minutes. Perhaps that mark could increase significantly during this year's edition.
3. The Men's 3k
A newly-crowned world record holder will toe the line at BU this weekend.
That'll be Cameron Myers, the 18-year-old Australian distance star who just broke the U20 world record in the mile last weekend at the Dr. Sander Invitational with a 3:53.12 clocking.
Myers has been a breakout talent over the last couple years, becoming the youngest person to ever go sub-4:00 in the mile back in 2023 at 16 years old. Now, he's competing for the first season ever on the indoor oval, and will be the headliner in the men's 3k at the Terrier Classic.
The target pace currently sits at sub-7:40.
Who will be some of Myers' top challengers? Look no further than Great Britain's Adam Fogg, who just finished third to Myers at the Dr. Sander Invitational last weekend, alongside Paris Olympian Matt Wilkinson.
On the collegiate side, Colin Sahlman of NAU could potentially be doubling back after the mile, and Collins Kiprotich of New Mexico will be one to watch after running a 3:58.60 mile at altitude at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational last Saturday.
