Dominik Shine Earns First NHL Contract At Age 31 With Detroit Red Wings
Grand Rapids Griffins veteran Dominik Shine earned his first NHL contract after nine seasons in the AHL.

Dominik Shine has been part of the Detroit Red Wings organization going all the way back to the end of the 2016-17 season when he first joined the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. Though he has been in the organization, he had never had a full standard contract with the NHL club.

Now in his eighth full season with the Griffins, the Red Wings announced Monday that the club had signed the 31-year-old veteran to a two-year deal with the big club.
Shine is currently putting up the best numbers of his pro career with 32 points in 40 games with Grand Rapids. His career high was achieved last year with 33 points in 65 games.
A Detroit-area native and alumnus of Northern Michigan University, Shine has appeared in 462 AHL games, each one of which has come with the Griffins.
Shine has been a reliable pro since his arrival in Grand Rapids, but over the last four seasons has seen his game take off as he has become a more frequent offensive contributor. Of the 170 points he’s scored in his AHL career, 122 have come over the last four seasons.
The Red Wings signed him for the remainder of this season and through the 2025-26 campaign. As a result, the Griffins released Shine from his AHL contract and he will report to Detroit. Should the Red Wings choose to send him back to the AHL, he will have to go through waivers first.
Shine is one of those players who had to climb just about every rung of the developmental ladder and did it slowly, but surely.
He spent four full seasons in the USHL with the Lincoln Stars before spending four full seasons with Northern Michigan. He earned a free agent contract with Grand Rapids right out of college and has been with the club ever since, spanning nine total seasons.
That’s a long time to wait for the call every player dreams about, but a good example of perseverance and patience paying off.
