Blues Rugby And Everything To Know | Super Rugby 2025 Preview

One of the world’s best professional rugby leagues returns for the 2025 season on Feb. 14, as the Super Rugby begins.

Super Rugby, armed with a new schedule format, played its first season in 1996 when SANZAR was formed and now features 11 teams from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and other Pacific Islands.

Loaded with All Blacks and Wallabies on the rosters throughout the league, Super Rugby joins the likes of the United Rugby Championship, Top 14 and the Premiership as one of the world’s best rugby competitions.

This year, the league plays its first matches on Valentine's Day, and that includes the defending Super Rugby champions, the Blues.

Here’s what to know about the Auckland Blues:

Blues Won Super Rugby Championship In 2024

The Blues won the Super Rugby final and snapped the long title reign of its rival the Crusaders, who had won every Super Rugby championship since 2017.

With the Crusaders failing to qualify for the playoffs, the Blues of Auckland, New Zealand, took advantage.

They beat the Chiefs in matchup of the previous two Super Rugby runners-up in the final, 41-10.

The Blues finished second in the table with 55 points and a 12-0-2 record, one point behind the Hurricanes.

The club has added to its roster with the addition of All Black super star Beauden Barrett. After he played in Japan, Barrett returned last year, and there was debate on whether he could play in the Super Rugby playoffs, but World Rugby regulations wouldn't allow it.

Barrett, 33, is a two-time World Rugby Player of the Year.

When Was The Last Time The Blues Won Back-To-Back Super Rugby Championships?

With Barrett back for the Blues, the club is trying to repeat as champions for the first time since 1997.

How Many Times Have The Blues Won The Super Rugby Championship?

The club has won the Super Rugby title four times, including the first two in 1996 and 1997 and again in 2003. But they went 21 years before winning again in 2024.

How Many All Blacks Are On The Blues?

There were nine 2024 All Blacks who played for the Blues in 2024. Barrett makes 10, though he didn't play for the Blues last season.

  • Caleb Clarke, Outside Back: Blues
  • Dalton Papali’i, Loose Forward: Blues
  • Harry Plummer, First Five-Eighths: Blues
  • Mark Tele’a, Outside Back: Blues
  • Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Prop: The Blues
  • Patrick Tuipulotu, Lock: Blues
  • Rieko Ioane, Mid-fielder: Blues
  • Sam Darry, Lock: Blues
  • Stephen Perofeta, Outside Back: Blues
  • Beauden Barrett, First Five-Eighths: Blues

Who Coaches The Blues?

Vern Cotter coaches the Blues and won the Super Rugby championship in his first season as the head coach. He signed an extension with the club after the title.

Before joining the Blues, he was the coach of the Fiji national team from 2020-2023.

Cotter also is the former national coach for Scotland and coached for Clermont of the Top 14 from 2006-2014.

Where Do The Blues Play?

The Blues play at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.
