The Grand Rapids Griffins will go for a sweep of their trip to Winnipeg when they visit the Manitoba Moose this Saturday afternoon in the FloHockey AHL Game of the Week (3:00 p.m. ET).

A four-goal third period Thursday night at Canada Life Centre carried the Griffins (23-12-3-1) to a 5-3 win in the opener of a two-game series with the Moose. Ville Husso’s season-high 39 saves led the Griffins, who also got 1-1-2 efforts from Ondrej Becher and Brogan Rafferty. The Griffins’ veteran base has been excellent all season and was again in the win as Sheldon Dries and Joe Snively both picked up goals. Grand Rapids also had forward prospect Carter Mazur back from injury for the first time in more than three months.

Thursday’s defeat was the third in a row for the Moose (11-22-1-1), who were shut out in back-to-back home games last weekend. Their 0-3-0-0 homestand has followed a road swing in which they won four games in a row against Calgary, Milwaukee, and the Griffins. Hard pressed for offense this season, the Moose lost forward Brad Lambert on recall Friday to the Winnipeg Jets; Manitoba has scored a league-low 77 goals this season.

Grand Rapids Griffins (Detroit Red Wings)

Grand Rapids is on a four-game point streak (3-0-1-0) since being swept in back-to-back home games against the Moose two weeks ago. These two games at Manitoba are the Griffins’ lone road contests in a 10-game stretch leading into the AHL All-Star break.

Grand Rapids is allowing just 2.51 goals per game behind an excellent first half from top prospect Sebastian Cossa along with NHL veterans Jack Campbell and Ville Husso. Cossa, a 22-year-old who went 15th overall to Detroit in the 2021 NHL Draft, has gone 12-7-3 | 2.31 | .917 in 22 games for the Griffins in a number-one role.

The Grand Rapids blue line is heavy on young prospects with rookie Shai Buium alongside Antti Tuomisto, Eemil Viro, and William Wallinder. The 21-year-old Buium won a pair of NCAA championships at the University of Denver and turned pro at the end of last season. A 2021 second-round pick, he has 14 assists in 35 games with Grand Rapids.

Dries, Snively, Dominik Shine, and Austin Watson, the team’s top-four scorers, have combined for 52 goals so far. Dries and Snively each have the team lead with 15 goals apiece. Rookie forward Nate Danielson is 4-18-22 through 39 games. Detroit took him ninth overall in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Grand Rapids ranks eighth in the AHL on the penalty kill at 85.1 percent. The Griffins’ six shorthanded goals tie them for third in the AHL. Their power play is 10th-best (18.9 percent)

Forward Elmer Söderblom remains on recall with Detroit after making his NHL season debut this past Tuesday night at Philadelphia. Another forward, Amadeus Lombardi, has been out of the line-up since Dec. 1. The second-year Griffin opened his season with nine goals in his first 20 games.

Manitoba Moose (Winnipeg Jets)

The Moose have just three wins in 17 home dates all season, posting a .206 point percentage that is second-worst in the AHL. They have lost their last six home games and been outscored 27-8 in that span.

Nikita Chibrikov’s 7-11-18 in 30 games to pace the Moose. Lambert (3-13-16) is tied with Parker Ford and Mason Shaw for second in team scoring. The Manitoba power play is operating at a league-worst 12.3 percent.

Thomas Milic took Thursday’s start after Kaapo Kähkönen had registered the past four decisions. Moose goaltenders this season have just an .875 save percentage, and the team is allowing 3.66 goals per game.

With Lambert recalled to the Jets, Moose forward Dominic Toninato has returned from his NHL recall. The 30-year-old forward has 6-5-11 in 25 games with the Moose, but has not dressed for them since Dec. 29. He played four games with the Jets during his recent recall.
