CT Ice Tournament: Quinnipiac, Yale, Sacred Heart, UConn Set To Battle

Connecticut has been a college hockey hotbed for years, but over the last few it has really heated up. The pride of the Nutmeg State will be on display this weekend in the annual CT Ice tournament as all four NCAA Men’s Division I teams in the state will descend on Fairfield, Conn., and the pristine Martire Family Arena at Sacred Heart University.

The event, which features Quinnipiac, UConn, Yale and SHU, is a two-day event with the teams paired off in a semifinal, with the winners going head-to-head and the losers playing in a third-place game the following day.

All four games of the CT Ice tournament will stream worldwide on FloHockey in addition to being broadcast locally on TV on SNY.

The action begins Friday afternoon with a marquee matchup between top-15 teams as No. 13 UConn takes on No. 15 Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. ET. In the nightcap, Yale will take on Atlantic Hockey America leader Sacred Heart at 7:30 p.m. ET.

To get you ready for the exciting showcase of Connecticut-based college hockey, here’s a quick look at all four teams participating.

Schedule For CT Ice Tournament

Friday, Jan. 24

  • No. 15 Quinnipiac vs. No. 13 UConn, 4 p.m. ET
  • Yale vs. Sacred Heart, 7:30 p.m. ET

Saturday, Jan. 25

  • Consolation: Yale vs. No. 15 Quinnipiac, 4 p.m. ET
  • Championship: No. 13 UConn vs. Sacred Heart, 7:30 p.m.

No. 13 UConn Huskies

Record: 12-8-2

UConn has been among the pleasant surprises of the college hockey season. With some big wins over teams like Boston College and Maine, the Huskies have moved up in the polls and currently sit ninth in the Pairwise rankings that help determine the NCAA tournament field. Where they sit now gets them comfortably in as an at-large. They have not lost a game since the calendar flipped to 2025, unbeaten in their last five contests.

While UConn has had some recent success in attracting top-end players, this is not a particularly star-studded team. That said, sophomore forward Joey Muldowney (SJS) has been a revelation this season, averaging a point per game while leading UConn with 12 goals and 22 points. Sabres prospect Jake Richard has taken a big step this year and is also averaging a point-per-game with 17 points in 17 appearances.

The Huskies are getting goaltending of late, too, with Tyler Muszelik (FLA) and Callum Tung splitting games more. Tung has a .941 save percentage in seven games and most recently made 30 saves in a 2-2 tie with Maine.

No. 15 Quinnipiac Bobcats

Record: 14-7-2

After a shakier start than we’re used to seeing from the Bobcats, it appears things have stabilized. Quinnipiac has won eight of their last 10 games and is unbeaten in five straight. They’re coming into the tournament relatively hot, though.

Quinnipiac is seeking its fourth straight CT Ice title and has certainly been the state’s shining program in recent years, highlighted by winning the 2023 NCAA championship.

Sophomores Mason Marcellus and Andon Cerbone have led the way offensively for Quinnipiac this season with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Graduate transfer Travis Treloar is the team’s Hobey Baker nominee with 10 goals and solid two-way play so far this season.

Goaltending was a big question coming into the season, but Dylan Silverstein has really stabilized the position for the Bobcats. He has appeared in 16 games and has a .914 save percentage. Considering Silverstein had to work a long, long way back from concussion issues as a younger player, he’s been one of the best stories in the NCAA this season.

Sacred Heart Pioneers

Record: 14-8-4

Currently in first place in Atlantic Hockey America, the Pioneers have been making the most of the Martire Family Arena that has quickly become one of the gems in college hockey when it comes to home rinks.

Head coach C.J. Marattolo was able to earn his 200th career victory in a hard-fought series with Cornell that saw SHU tie and win against the Big Red.

As a result, the Pioneers have been receiving votes in the USCHO Men’s College Hockey Poll, which cuts off at 20 slots. According to the pollsters, SHU is the 25th-best team in college hockey and the Pairwise says the same. They’ve never been to the NCAA tournament at the Division I level, but if they can keep this up and win the AHA title, they’ll be there. CT Ice will offer a good test for that.

Junior Felix Trudeau leads the team with 27 points in 26 games, but one of the real bright spots for SHU has been freshman goalie Ajeet Gundarah. The BCHL alumnus has a sparkling .932 save percentage while going 10-3-2 over 15 appearances.

Yale Bulldogs

Record: 5-11-1

The last few years have been a grind for Yale as the 2013 NCAA championship seems like a much more distant memory nowadays. The Bulldogs have not been back to the NCAA championship since 2016 and don’t appear close to getting back as they haven’t had a winning season since pre-pandemic days. The Ivy League schools have certainly had some disadvantages in the post-COVID NCAA.

Yale will come into CT Ice with a little momentum, having earned a key win over ECAC foe St. Lawrence last weekend. The Bulldogs also had a stunning 7-5 win over Boston University in their only game in December, so there have definitely been some bright spots over the course of this season.

Connecticut native Ronan O’Donnell has been the offensive bright spot for Yale this season. He has a team-best nine goals and 14 points so far this season and will basically be playing on home ice as he hails from Fairfield.

Freshman goalie Noah Pak has been getting some more playing time of late and has delivered, including a 21-save performance last weekend in the win over St. Lawrence. He helped backstop the Collingwood Blues to back-to-back OJHL titles over the previous two seasons before enrolling at Yale.
