From the University of New Mexico’s track and field team to other collegiate and professional athletes kicking off their seasons, this event will serve as a key marker to assess where everyone stands as the indoor season progresses.

For the University of New Mexico’s team, assistant coach Brian Maty shared that this meet will help assess the athletes' starting points for the season. He described it as a “rust-buster” for many. “We’re excited to open up on our home track for the first time this season. It’s a relatively low-pressure environment this weekend, but it’s always a bit different when you put the singlet on and line up for your first race in a while,” Maty said.

As for fan favorite Habtom Samuel, Coach Maty provided an update: “Unfortunately, Habtom had to miss the meet in December in Boston, so he’s gearing up for the mile this weekend. He’s also targeting a big 5k in Boston next weekend, where we’ll really take a swing at something fast.”

Another athlete to keep an eye on is Brandon Miller, representing the Brooks Beasts. Miller, known for his impressive range and speed, will be opening his season in the 800m at the MLK Invitational. While this race will serve as a key marker for where he’s at in his training, it’s just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting year for the 800m specialist. Miller has set his sights on a major goal: breaking the 600m world record at the Millrose Games in a couple of weeks. The indoor season is a crucial time for him, as he sharpens his focus for future events, and the MLK Invitational will be an important step in gauging his fitness and preparation.
