You don’t often seen divisional opponents make trades, but the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks made a move that will likely impact their AHL clubs more than their NHL rosters.

In a one-for-one deal, San Jose acquired forward Pavol Regenda while sending veteran Justin Bailey to the Ducks. Anaheim already announced that Bailey will report to the San Diego Gulls.

The Ducks had previously acquired Regenda as an undrafted free agent out of Slovakia. The 25-year-old appeared in 19 NHL games, but has primarily skated for San Diego. His numbers have dipped a bit in the AHL this year, with 16 points in 36 games with the Gulls.

Meanwhile, Bailey is in his ninth year of professional hockey and has appeared in 141 NHL games. That includes 59 with the Sharks last season. He has played exclusively in the AHL this season with 14 points in 33 games. Bailey is a veteran of 403 AHL games in his career with 255 points.

Both players are due to become free agents after the season.

The Ducks will gain a veteran player who can provide some spot-duty in the NHL if needed, while Regenda will get a chance to get a fresh start elsewhere after failing to stick with the NHL club in Anaheim.

Regenda, in particular, has a bit more runway as a prospect yet and also won’t take up a veteran roster slot for San Jose. Internationally for Slovakia, Regenda has been a reliable player, having appeared in each of the last three World Championships. He also won a bronze medal with Slovakia at the 2022 Olympics.

The Barracuda have been trying to get back to their winning ways after starting the season red hot. They're currently fifth in the Pacific Division standings. San Diego, meanwhile, sits ninth in the 10-team division and in need of a spark of getting things turned around.
