Lone Star Conference member Angelo State came just short of repeating as NCAA Div. II College World Series champions, falling to the University of Tampa in the championship round. The Rams' run to Cary, North Carolina capped a wildly competitive campaign in the Lone Star, which promises to again be one of the strongest conferences in Div. II baseball.

Three Lone Star teams open the 2025 season ranked in the Top 25 of the D2 Baseball poll, but others beginning the campaign unranked have the potential to break out.

Angelo State

Head Coach: Kevin Brooks

2024 Record: 44-21, 32-16 LSC (Lost NCAA National Championship Round)

The 2025 season marks the 20th anniversary since Kevin Brooks took over as head coach, and in that time, Angelo State has been among the most consistently successful programs in Div. II baseball.

The Rams’ trip to the 2024 Div. II College World Series marked their sixth under Brooks’ direction, and a return trip to the National Championship Series followed Angelo State’s 2023 national title. ASU has the firepower to return to the finale in 2025, featuring no shortage of key players from both Div. II College World Series rosters.

All-American Jacob Guerrero headlines the group. Guerrero earned his second All-Regional selection in 2024, capping up a stellar junior season in which he batted .361, homered 10 times, and swiped 30 bases. Guerrero is one of four Rams who earned 1st- or 2nd-Team All-LSC distinction last season, along with pitchers Caleb Heuertz, Alezeah Gutierrez, and Dax Dathe.

Starters Gutierrez and Dathe each posted 9-4 records, both working more than 81 innings. Dathe mowed down 110 batters, while Gutierrez struck out 74 and held opposing hitters to a .222 average.

On offense, the Rams returned Weston Valasek, who had a .459 on-base percentage and 26 stolen bases. Justin Harris swiped an additional 18 bases and hit seven home runs, second-most among returning ASU batters.

All told, Angelo State should be a national championship contender once again in 2025 and one of the standard bearers in a loaded Lone Star Conference.

Cameron

Head Coach: Kyle Williams

2024 Record: 17-33, 16-32

The Cameron Aggies have not finished with a winning record since 2017, a trend they look to end in the always-tough LSC. Cameron took its lumps in 2024 but finished the campaign on the upswing with a split series against UT Tyler, UAFS, and Oklahoma Christian, and a series win over St. Mary’s.

The Aggies head into 2025 returning Lance Barnett’s big bat. Barnett hit .388 and homered 16 times in 2024. Donovan Borg brought plenty of pop to the Cameron order, as well, knocking out 12 homers. Shortstop Kody Bigford, who drew a team-high 40 walks, leveraged his ability to get on base with 17 swipes.

Eastern New Mexico

Head Coach: Riley Price

2024 Record: 21-29, 19-29

Eastern New Mexico has made considerable strides in Riley Price’s tenure as coach, including reaching the LSC Tournament in 2023. The Greyhounds will try to break through to unprecedented heights this season, Price’s seventh at the helm.

The Greyhounds return standout utilityman Luciano Terilli, a 2nd Team All-LSC honoree last season. Terilli batted .363 and drove in 43 runs, was an effective outfielder, and made 13 appearances on the mound where he struck out 15.

Alongside the multitalented Terilli, ENMU also returns Tucker Gideon, who hit .346, and Willie Ponce. Ponce batted .335, homered five times, and swiped a team-leading 16 bases. The Greyhound's pitching staff has some leading arms to replace, but the bats have the potential to keep ENMU competitive against the best of the LSC.

Lubbock Christian

Head Coach: Nathan Blackwood

2024 Record: 45-16, 35-13 (Lost in the NCAA Tournament South Central Regional Championship)

2024 LSC regular-season champion Lubbock Christian must replace some outstanding contributors to last season’s success, most notably Lone Star Player of the Year Carson Ogilvie. However, the Chaparrals return 1st Team All-LSC selections Brevin McCool and Jacob Gutierrez in the batting order, with Ryan Markwardt anchoring the pitching rotation.

Markwadt struck out 81 batters in 82 ⅔ innings and went 12-1 in 17 appearances (14 starts). Andrew Duran, who made 14 starts, struck out 48 and posted a 6-1 record.

The batting lineup is stacked with Gutierrez coming off a .424 hitting season that included 10 home runs, seven triples, and 60 RBI. He slugged .723, got on base on half of all his 184 at-bats, and put up a 1.223 OPS. McCool hit .377 with a team-leading 14 homers, 79 RBI, and a .709 slugging percentage.

Shea Bowen hit .338 with nine home runs and 41 RBI, and stole 12 bases on 15 attempts, while Frayner Chavez batted .305, hit three homers, and swiped 11 bags.

All told, LCU has one of the most impressive offenses in Div. II baseball. With the reigning LSC Coaching Staff of the Year, the Chaps are built to make a run at the Div. II College World Series.

Oklahoma Christian

Head Coach: Lonny Cobble

2024 Record: 11-37, 11-37

Coach Lonny Cobble has been the cornerstone for Oklahoma Christian baseball from its first steps as an NCAA program. His successful tenure has produced NCAA Tournament berths and MLB draftees. In 2025, Cobble will lead Oklahoma Christian in pursuit of a turnaround from a last-place finish.

The Eagles have a pair of hitters who eclipsed .335 batting in 2024 with Hunter Jones (.370) and Justin Spencer. Jones slugged .623 and posted a 1.113 OPS, while Jones hit .338 and drove in a team-leading 41 runs.

The duo leads the Oklahoma Christian offense, while the pitching staff seeks improved overall production after taking some lumps a season ago. Naut Kragt, the top returning starter with 11 starts in 14 appearances, struck out 43 in 51 ⅔ innings but also surrendered an 8.54 ERA.

St. Edward’s

Head Coach: Ryan Femath

2024 Record: 23-29, 23-25

St. Edward’s heads into its second year under the direction of head coach Ryan Femath. The Hilltoppers were outstanding in 2023, going 40-17 and 34-13 in the LSC en route to the NCAA South Central Regional.

After stumbling in 2024, the Hilltoppers regroup for 2025 with .311 batter Diego Solis, .305 hitter Trevor Sebek, and Carlo Figueroa, who hit seven home runs in 89 at-bats. The trio will look to make up for the void left in the batting order with Davis Drewek gone after a 14-home run, .331 hitting, and 1.194 OPS season.

Jakub Rayfield, who made 13 starts in 14 appearances, posted a 4.83 ERA with 54 strikeouts and a 1.52 WHIP last season while Brennan Berdon, who made 11 starts, is coming off a 35-strikeout season working 46 ⅔ innings.

St. Mary’s

Head Coach: Frank Kellner

2024 Record: 20-30, 18-30

Coming off a finish near the cellar of the LSC standings, St. Mary’s looks to rebound in 2025. The former powerhouses of the Heartland Conference are looking to make their mark on the Lone Star for the first time since joining the league in 2020.

The university tabbed former Major Leaguer Frank Kellner as head coach before last season. In Year 2, the Rattlers feature returning home-runs leader Garrett Brooks, who had eight round-trippers in 2024. Jacob Elizondo is also back after swiping a team-high 13 bases, and left-handed pitcher Gabe Cook had a 3.32 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 21 ⅔ innings of work out of the bullpen.

St. Mary’s replaces some key contributors, including a bullpen gem in Andrew Girod and leading batters Devin Goins and RJ Galvan.

Texas A&M International

Head Coach: Ruben Rodriguez

2024 Record: 24-28, 24-24

Texas A&M International reached the conference championship tournament in 2024 thanks in part to a late-season run, winning 6-of-8 down the stretch. The Dustdevils will try to parlay that finish into the 2025 season behind one of the best hitters in the LSC, Abiam Medina.

Medina hit .405 and produced a 1.111 OPS in 2024, homering seven times and driving in a team-high 58. Texas A&M International also returns Omar Cervantes, who batted .356 with a .994 OPS and team-leading eight home runs; and Nomar Prieto, coming off a .329 batting season and 23 stolen bases.

The offensive weapons bolster a Dustdevils roster that also brings back its leading starting pitchers: Ciro Benavides, who posted a 4.59 ERA in a team-high 82 ⅓ innings; and Jose Duran, who had a 4.32 ERA, .264 opponent batting average, and 81 strikeouts.

Texas A&M-Kingsville

Head Coach: Jason Gonzales

2024 Record: 23-27, 21-27

The Javelinas look to return to the NCAA Regionals after missing the last two postseasons. They will do so with just about all of their leading batters from a season ago back in the rotation for 2025.

Ulises Quiroga was tops among the group, hitting .345 with a 1.002 OPS, seven home runs, and a .585 slugging percentage. All were best among Texas A&M-Kingsville hitters making at least 100 at-bats. Fisher Davis also eclipsed a 1.000 OPS thanks to his .327 batting average, six homers, and team-leading 33 walks drawn.

Isaiah Aguilar hit .330 in a team-high 182 at-bats and homered five times, while Jacob Cueva hit another five round-trippers and batted just below .300 at .296.

Shoring up the pitching will be key for the Javelinas, but the bevy of returning bats could power this team into the upper half of the LSC race.

UT Permian Basin

Head Coach: Justin Phillips

2024 Record: 35-25, 28-20 (Lost in NCAA Tournament South Central Region #1)

First-year UTPB head coach Justin Phillips brings a diverse background, with experience in Div. II at Delta State; MLB as a scout for the Kansas City Royals; and coaching high school in West Texas. He takes over a Falcons team that reached the 2024 NCAA Playoffs behind a lineup that includes returning All-LSC second baseman Carson Johnson.

Johnson brings both a steady bat at the plate and a reliable glove in the middle infield. He hit .316 and slugged .548 in 2024 with five home runs and 46 RBI. He had 150 assists and was in 36 double plays on defense. UTPB also returns outfielder Jack Haggerty, who hit .367, stole 15 bases, and drove in 46 a season ago.

On the mound, right-handed pitcher Bryan Adams is back after striking out 36 in 39 ⅔ innings coming out of the bullpen. Righty Trevor Barth is the leading returning starter, having made 17 appearances (15 starts) in 2024.

UT Tyler

Head Coach: Brent Porche

2024 Record: 29-23, 28-20

Following a finish in the upper echelon of the 2024 LSC standings, the Patriots look for a conference championship in 2025. Boasting one of the top starting pitchers in not just the LSC, but all of Div. II baseball is a good place to begin that pursuit.

Rawley Hector finished last season with a scant 2.95 ERA in 13 starts. He struck out 56 in his 73 ⅓ innings of work and maintained a .241 opponent batting average. The UT Tyler pitching staff also welcomes back Garrett Arredondo, who had a 3.06 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 11 appearances with six starts; and Josh Pelfrey, who worked 41 ⅔ innings with seven starts.

Outfielder Kyle Atkinson, who garnered All-LSC honors, hit .336 in 137 at-bats. He homered seven times, slugged .562, and came just shy of one dotting with a .998 OPS. Catcher Blake LaBuda is also back after earning All-Defensive Team recognition for his work behind the dish.

West Texas A&M

Head Coach: Cory Hall

2024 Record: 37-19, 34-14 (Lost in NCAA Tournament South Central Region #2)

The Aggies hope to build off of their 2024 run to the postseason with a push to the Div. II College World Series. West Texas A&M welcomes back a variety of key contributors from last season, including LSC Newcomer of the Year Kyle Micklus.

The catcher Micklus hit a remarkable .409 in 2024, slugged .611, and, thanks in part to his additional 39 walks drawn, had the nation’s 21st-highest on-base percentage among all Div. II batters at .524. Micklus is one of three Aggies who earned 1st Team All-LSC a season ago back for 2025, joining Arizona State transfer Dylan Fesperman and Kory Schmidt.

Schmidt batted .394, homered 12 times, drove in 62 runs, and produced a 1.164 OPS. Fesperman was right behind with a .383 batting average, 1.157 OPS, and 11 home runs.

The pitching staff returns Matt Milner, who made 13 starts and finished with a 5.14 ERA and 41 strikeouts. The group will collectively feature a variety of new contributors, however, including Barton transfer Andrew Simone.
