According to the AHL’s ruling, Gallant violated Rule 70.10 which bars players from leaving the players’ bench for the purpose of starting an altercation.
Late in the first period of Wednesday night’s game between Calgary and Tucson, Roadrunners defenseman Montana Onyebuchi laid a hit on Calgary forward William Stromgren.
As play progressed up towards the Calgary zone, one Wranglers forward came off the ice for a line change, but two jumped on. Stromgren was slow to get back to the bench and did not arrive until after Gallant and Onyebuchi had already dropped their gloves and each received fighting majors.
AHL rule 70.10 states that “The first player to leave the players’ or penalty bench illegally during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation from either or both teams shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next six (6) regular League and/or Playoff games of his team.”
As a result, Gallant will miss the remainder of Calgary’s games in January.
Gallant is a 10-year veteran of the AHL and has long been willing to drop the gloves. He has 1,083 penalty minutes in his career including 43 through 19 games this season. No player has more penalty minutes in AHL play since Gallant entered the league.
