For those not familiar with California geography, the University of California, Berkeley actually is nearly 500 miles from Cathedral City, California, the longtime home of the famed Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

That gives the California softball team plenty of travel time to celebrate any success it might have at the annual event or discuss what might’ve gone wrong on the field.

In 2024, the Golden Bears left the Mary Nutter with a 5-0 record for the second consecutive year, and they’ll look to extend that streak in 2025.

The latest edition of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic will take place Feb. 20-23.

Cal is coming off a 37-19 season (9-13 in Pac-12 play) that ended with a quick exit from the regional round of the 2024 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. 

Prior to reaching the national postseason bracket, the Golden Bears fell to Stanford in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Softball Championship, which was won by UCLA.

The Golden Bears will begin their 2025 campaign at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona (Feb. 7-9), and that will be followed by the Wilson Invitational in Long Beach, California (Feb. 14-16).

Then, it’ll be time to head back to Cathedral City for the 2025 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

The 2025 Mary Nutter will feature 31 teams, headlined by Tennessee, Nebraska and Utah. California is one of the schools slated for six games during the event and scheduled to face Oregon, Cal State Fullerton, Washington, Seattle, Loyola Marymount and Northwestern. 

The Mary Nutter will take place from Feb. 20-23 at the unique Big League Dreams Complex, which has five fields available for the event.

In its last appearance at the Mary Nutter in 2024, Cal defeated Illinois, Hawai’i, Seattle, Long Beach State and Cal Poly.

About Big League Dreams Cathedral City

The Big League Dreams Sports Parks are scattered throughout the United States and provide recreational and tournament players of all ages the chance to compete on world-class fields, often built as replicas of famous stadiums from the storied history of Major League Baseball.

Along with the nostalgic fields, the Big League Dreams venues include a restaurant and bar, batting cages, play area for children, stadium seating and space for other sports (hockey, soccer, sand volleyball), events and competitions. 

Big League Dreams Cathedral City was the first of the eight BLD properties to open, doing so in 1998. The park includes five fields. Among them, Boston’s Fenway Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and New York’s Yankee Stadium.

Who Was Mary Nutter?

Mary Nutter was an All-American softball player and a pioneer in the sport. 

She was a coach at Pittsburgh State and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1988 and the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

Nutter died in 2012.
