Rochester received leading scorer Isak Rosén back from the Buffalo Sabres to open the week. The 21-year-old forward is a boost for the Rochester power play, which has struggled in the first quarter of this season, and he had one of two man-advantage goals Friday. Chosen 14th overall by the Sabres in the 2021 NHL Draft, Rosén broke through with a 20-goal effort last season with the Amerks and has 6-10-16 through 16 games this season. Another top prospect on loan from Buffalo is goaltender Devon Levi, a workhorse for Rochester on a second-half assignment last season. He turned in 20 saves Friday for his first pro shutout.
Brandon Halverson has been the story for the Crunch. Playing on an AHL deal with the Crunch, Halverson has ranked among the AHL’s top goaltenders this season. That work followed an excellent finish last season that earned him work in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Amerks-Crunch rivalry has gotten a jolt after two consecutive meetings in the Calder Cup Playoffs that both went the distance. Last season it was Syracuse taking the teams’ playoff series after the Amerks had taken the 2023 showdown.

Rochester Americans -- What To Watch For
The Amerks underwent several offseason changes, starting with Mike Leone taking over for Seth Appert as head coach. Appert had overseen Buffalo’s rebuilding effort in Rochester for four seasons and was promoted to the NHL club’s coaching staff.
Rosén, a 21-year-old forward, is a boost for the Rochester power play, which has struggled in the first quarter of this season. Chosen 14th overall by the Sabres in the 2021 NHL Draft, Rosén broke through with a 20-goal effort last season with the Amerks and has 6-10-16 through 16 games this season. Levi, 22, went 16-6-4 | 2.42 | .927 as a key second-half addition last season for the Amerks.
Two other top forward prospects are in Rochester for their first full AHL seasons. Konsta Helenius, who went to the Sabres 14th overall this past June, is just 18 years old, but he came to Rochester with two seasons of Liiga experience. Anton Wahlberg, a 2023 second-rounder, is only 19 years old but earned time with the SHL’s Malmö Redhawks.
Syracuse Crunch -- What To Watch For
Niko Huuhtanen, a seventh-round pick, has made a quick adjustment back to North America after two seasons in Finland. The Liiga rookie of the year in 2022-23, he followed that up last season with 19-27-46 in 52 games for Jukurit Mikkeli. That work prompted the Tampa Bay Lightning to sign him to a three-year entry-level deal last May, and the 21-year-old has responded by being one of Syracuse’s top forwards.
Coming out of the University of Michigan after three years there, rookie forward Dylan Duke is also off to a strong start. Taken by the Lightning in the same 2021 draft class as Huuhtanen, the fourth-round selection had 26 goals in 41 games last season for the Wolverines.
