Ireland Rugby, which moved to No. 2 in the World Rugby Rankings this week, hosts the 2023 Rugby World Cup darlings, Fiji, in the penultimate national match of 2024 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Nov. 23. 

Ireland started the Autumn Nations Series as the No. 1 team in the world but dropped to No. 3 following a loss to the All Blacks earlier this month. But the then-No. 2 All Blacks fell to France, the No. 4 team, and Ireland is back behind No. 1 South Africa, where they have spent most of the 2024 international season.

Fiji Rugby enters the match at No. 9. They lost to Scotland 57-17 but beat Wales 24-19. 

Ireland has several new faces making debuts against Fiji and are also starting Sam Pendergast at the No. 10.

Full-Time! Ireland Win! IRE 52 - FIJ 17

The signature performance Irish fans have been waiting for has been delivered; the set plays looked great, and the wide attacking game was on point. Arguably the most underrated part of this performance was the dual playmaking axis when Ciaran Frawley entered the fray. Whilst Andy Farrell has been clear that he has seen Frawley as a ten, the distribution he brings to the inside centre and fullback positions could well be the way to go for both Leinster and Ireland. For Fiji, this was a disappointing end to what was an incredible season in which they secured seven wins from ten outings. One minute after scoring a try Turagacoke is given his marching orders for diving over a ruck and clattering into Craig Casey! Utter madness from the Fijians.

Vintage Fiji! You lose focus for a second and they punish you! Caleb Muntz pulls off a sublime offload to find the big man charging onto the ball! IRE 42 - FIJ 17.

Ireland nail a first driving maul try in what feels like an age! Debutant Gus McCarthy, who, outside of a few wobbly line-out throws, has been immense today! Prendergast keeps his perfect kicking record rolling! IRE 42 - FIJ 10. 

Nearly Another Try!

Ireland came so close to another try through veteran Conor Murray, but the pass from Ciaran Frawley went forward. It was a super launch play from the Irish attack but that final pass is what has let them down again. 

TRY! Fiji! Kitione Salawa | Min 54

Fiji are on the board with their first try as Salawa crawls through the breakdown and bursts over the line. Really, that was a breakdown in the Irish defence, with Stuart McCloskey and Joe McCarthy getting caught out of position around the breakdown. Caleb Muntz nails the conversion. IRE 35 - FIJ 10.

Ireland Ringing The Changes

Now seemingly home and dry, Andy Farrell is making sweeping changes. Unfortunately for Jacob Stockdale, who has been electric today, he limps off with a niggle whilst his Ulster teammate Cormac Izuchukwu is replaced by their provincial captain Iain Henderson. Conor Murray and Stuart McCloskey have both entered action, as has Cian Prendergast and Tom O'Toole.

The Irish attack is on fire! Referee Holly Davidson gets taken out by the Fijian defence! Craig Casey is once again at the heart of the action with a volleyball-style offload! Ladies and gentlemen this is the performance from Casey that Irish fans have been waiting for! Most importantly for Ireland, this has proven that the players who are set to take over from the veterans in the next year are ready to go. Prendergast nails the conversion! IRE 35 - FIJ 3.

Second Half!

Prendergast gets us underway here, and Ireland has come out hot with some good ball retention, and Tadhg Beirne makes a superb break before Ciaran Frawley takes on the attack. The Irish wide game has found its groove once again! 

Half-Time Report - IRE 28 - FIJ 3

Ireland has been in cruise control throughout this opening forty, similar to how they played against Argentina. Returning players Casey and Stockdale are making a point of why they need to be included. The Munster scrumhalf has been electric and looks to be every bit a challenger to Jamison Gibson-Park as the first choice. He did take a late and rather dirty shot from Mawi, who is fortunate not to be given his marching orders. For Fiji, their defence has been woefully narrow, with Ireland exposing them on several occasions. Fortunately for the visitors, the final pass hasn't quite stuck yet, but they can't bank on this remaining case.

That was exactly why Prendergast has been receiving such hype! Craig Casey whips the ball from the scrum to midfield before the flyhalf gets a pinpoint kick across to Mack Hansen who goes over untouched! Incredible play from the men in green! Prendergast hits the posts for the conversion which goes over and Ireland look comfortable here. IRE 28 - FIJ 3.

Ireland are going through the gears here, and Craig Casey keeps them rolling with a pinpoint little kick over the ruck that pins the Fijians deep into their own 22. Ciaran Frawley has taken a huge hit here and, after a few minutes, manages to get up and continue.

Craig Casey, who has been the best Irish player so far today, pulls off a finish that Cheslin Kolbe would be proud of as he dives over the Fijian cover defence! Prendergast nails the conversion from the touchline! IRE 21 - FIJ 3.

Ireland's fullback Jamie Osborne has been forced off with what looks like a painful injury. Ciaran Frawley comes onto the pitch in search of redemption following his challenging outing against the All Blacks.

Ireland are looking really potent in attack here; Jacob Stockdale has been immense with his work rate to get on the ball and make things happen. Yet, for all of their pressure, Ireland has yet to find that final pass for another try.

Now it is Fiji's turn to be down. A player, Eroni Mawi, lifted the ball carrier and slammed him down. Sam Prendergast misses touch in a killer and Fiji now have a 22m kick-out.

A slightly fortuitous penalty for Fiji here with a slight miscommunication from Ireland that most referees would've let that go but nevertheless Fiji are on the scoreboard! Sam Prendergast is back on to take the kick-off. IRE 14 - FIJ 3.

Prendergast In The Clear!

A major boost for Ireland here as the word comes down that Sam Prendergast will be coming back onto the pitch. It was a very lucky outcome for the flyhalf, who really was cynical with his targeting of Salawa.

No Try! Fiji!

Fiji came within an inch of a try, and it was beautifully constructed. Identified that scrumhalf Craig Casey was isolated on the wing, and they targeted him with a crossfield kick before there was a knock-on as they tried to a touchdown. Ireland now has a big scrum on their five-meter line, so the pressure is still firmly on the men in green.

Ireland flyhalf Sam Prendergast could be in real trouble here with a cynical shoulder charge on Fijian backrow Kitione Salawa. Unfortunately for the youngster, he has made head contact, and there is no mitigation. Let's see if this stays yellow or whether it gets upgraded.

When Does The 2024-2025 Investec Champions Cup Begin? When Is The Champions Cup Final?

The Investec Champions Cup and the EPCR Challenge Cup begin Dec. 6, and the four-round pool-play action ends Jan. 19, 2025. The Round of 16 starts on April 4, while the quarterfinals are April 11-13. The semifinals are May 2-4. 

The EPCR Championships weekend is in Cardiff, Wales at Principality Stadium. There are championship games on May 23 (EPCR Challenge Cup) and May 24 (Investec Champions Cup).
