NCAA Cross Country Great Lakes Regional 2024 Results: Notre Dame XC Sweeps

Notre Dame won the team race to sweep the regionals, and Mercy Kinyanjui and William Zegarski won the individual races.

Notre Dame Women Ahead of Great Lakes Region

Mercy Kinyanjui won the Women's NCAA Cross Country Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 15 at Silver Creek Metro Park in Norton, Ohio. 

The redshirt freshman runner representing Toledo finished the 6K run at 19:29.7 to punch her ticket to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on November 23 in Wisconsin.

Toledo also had six other runners finish the race, including Laura Nicholson, who placed 6th. The other top five finishers were Rachel Forsyth (Michigan State), Siona Chisholm (Notre Dame), Emily Paupore (Central Michigan), and Erin Strzelecki (Notre Dame).

Notre Dame won the women's championship with a score of 51, followed by Wisconsin with 97 and Toledo with 100.

William Zegarski Wins Men's Great Lakes Region Cross Country 2024 Championship

Zegarski finished with a 29:12.7 time, just .2 seconds faster than Purdue's Douglas Buckeridge. Dominic Serem, Bismack Kipchirchir, and Carter Solomon were among the top five. Butler also had two runners finish in the top ten, with Austin Gabby and Florian LePallec finishing 7 and 8.

The Notre Dame men's won the team race by 12 points over Wisconsin, meaning the Fighting Irish have swept the Great Lakes Regionals.

Where Are the D1 Cross Country Regionals 2024? 

Here are where all the regionals are being held on Nov. 15.

How Do Teams, Runners Qualify For NCAA D1 Cross Country National Championship?

For men's and women's, the top two teams in each regional — there are nine in total — automatically qualify for the championships, which equates to 18 automatic qualifiers. 

The NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee will then choose 13 at-large teams to fill out the 31 team field.

Individually,  the first four finishers who do not belong to an automatic qualifier or an at-large team automatically advance to the championships. All four finishers have to finish in the top 25 within their region. Altogether, 36 individuals automatically qualify and two are chosen at-large, making 38 the grand total. The two at-large selections are the highest placing individuals at a regional that were not automatic qualifiers.

When Is The NCAA D1 Cross Country Championships 2024; NCAA XC Championship Schedule

The Cross Country Championships are at 10:20 a.m. (women’s 6000m) and 11:10 a.m. (men’s 10000m) on Nov. 23. The Division II and Division III Championships will be held on the same day, though start times have not yet been determined.

Where Are the The NCAA D1 Cross Country Championships 2024?

The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Division I National Championships are at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Verona, Washington. They will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

  • Division II: Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, California
