NCAA Champions Jesse Mendez & Andrew Alirez Impress At 141 lbs On Week 1
Andrew Alirez and Jesse Mendez may be on a collision course for the 2025 NCAA finals. Both had impressive starts to the season last weekend.
Andrew Alirez and Jesse Mendez won the last two NCAA titles at 141 lbs, and they. might be on a collision course for the 2025 NCAA finals. The top two 141-pounders both faced stiff competition on the opening weekend of NCAA action. Northern Colorado 2023 NCAA champ Andrew Alirez took on #11 Josh Edmond of Missouri while Ohio State 2024 NCAA champ Jesse Mendez ran into Lehigh All-American Luke Stanich in the Clarion Open finals. Both returning champs earned dominant victories to start the season.
On Friday night in Greeley, Alirez began his final season as a Bear with a 12-2 major decision over Josh Edmond, the 11th ranked 141-pounder in the country. The match was one of the more highly anticipated bouts of the weekend, but Alirez made it a one-sided contest. Watch that match below.
Two days later, Jesse Mendez met Luke Stanich in the Clarion Open finals. Stanich was an All-American at 125 lbs last season for Lehigh. Mendez majored him 14-3 to cap off an all-bonus point performance. He's now 5-0 on the season with two falls, two techs, and a major. Watch his final over Stanich below.
