About The New York City Marathon
The New York City Marathon first was held in 1970, attracting 127 runners, 55 of whom finished the journey through Central Park. Since inception, it has been put on by New York Road Runners and now is one of 60 adult and youth races the groups organizes each year.
As the race continued to grow and become part of the growing phenomenon of big-city racing, it attracted competitors from around the globe – from novices to the world’s most elite runners.
And, along with being the largest marathon in the world and one of the most anticipated days in sports each year, the New York City Marathon is a huge fundraiser for charity.
Since the introduction of the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program in 2006, more than $520 million has been raised for over 1,000 non-profit organizations.
The New York City Marathon is held during the first week of November each year and gives competitors an opportunity to see all five of New York City’s boroughs, starting on Staten Island and ended where it all began more than 50 years ago – Central Park in Manhattan.
The event includes elite runners chasing world records, A-list celebrities, wheelchair racers and more recreational competitors, all of whom will set out in waves from the starting line in Fort Wadsworth.
Among the entrants for the 2024 edition will be both defending champions. Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia won the 2023 race in a course-record 2:04.58, and Hellen Obiri of Kenya was the women's winner with a time of 2:27.23.
To be eligible for prize money the NYC Marathon, competitors must finish the race in 3 hours, 10 minutes or better.
