The first seven events on the 2024 Diamond League schedule took place between April 20 and June 2, after which, a month-long hiatus allowed many countries to finalize their teams and plans for the upcoming Olympics.
Three more Diamond League events were held in the weeks leading up to the Olympics, including a memorable stop in Paris during the first week of July.
The Olympic Games then took place in the City of Light from July 26 through Aug. 11, with the track and field events being held Aug. 1-11.
Now, the Diamond League is back to wind down its 2024 campaign, with competition resuming in a city with unrivaled Olympic ties and history, as Lausanne is home to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee.
The two-day Athletissima/Diamond League Lausanne 2024 will take place at the Pontaise Olympic Stadium, a multi-purpose venue primarily used for soccer. It serves as the home of FC Stade Lausanne Ouchy, which plays in the Swiss Super League.
About The Diamond League
The 2024 Diamond League season kicked off at the end of April with a pair of stops in China – Xiamen and Shanghai/Suzhou – and then visited Qatar on May 10, Morocco on May 19, Eugene, Oregon (Prefontaine Classic), on May 25, Oslo (Bislett Games) on May 30, Stockholm (BAUHAUS-galan) on June 2, Paris on July 7, Monaco (Herculis EBS Monaco) on July 12 and London (London Athletics Meet) on July 20.
During the 15-event Diamond League schedule this year, athletes will cross the globe, with the season-ending championship event taking place in Brussels, Belgium, on Sept. 13-14.
The Diamond League Lausanne 2024 will include seven men’s disciplines and seven women’s disciplines, as athletes continue to collect points toward the year’s final event in Belgium.
The invitation-only Diamond League brings together the most elite track & field athletes to showcase their skills, earn prize money, collect points toward the season-ending championship event and ultimately elevate the status of athletics across the globe.
Traditionally, Diamond League competition includes a slate of 16 disciplines, though not every meet features all of them.
Points accumulated during the first 14 events of the season determine the athletes who advance to the final event, where they compete for more prize money and Diamond League titles.
The disciplines featured in Lausanne in 2024 will be:
Men
- 110-Meter Hurdles
- 200 Meters
- 400 Meters
- Long Jump
- 1,500 Meters
- Javelin
- Pole Vault
Women
- 100 Meters
- 100-Meter Hurdles
- 400-Meter Hurdles
- 800 Meters
- 3,000 Meters
- Shot Put
- High Jump
Many of the athletes are looking to continue the momentum of the recent Olympics, while others will be looking for redemption and a fresh start after not doing as well as they’d hoped in Paris.
The Lausanne meet is one of five events remaining on the 2024 Diamond League calendar, which includes the two-day final event in Brussels.
The Diamond League events typically feature many Olympic and world champions, and the turnout for Lausanne is expected to be noteworthy due to its closeness to the Olympics, with 18 current Olympic or world champions scheduled to compete.
Among those expected to compete in the Lausanne are four of the top five finishers from the men’s 800 at the Olympics, which saw some blazing times - Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Kenya; Marco Arop, Canada; Bryce Hoppel, United States; Mohamed Attaoui, Spain. Wanyonyi won the Olympic gold medal just ahead of Arop.
The men’s 200 also will be a spotlight event, as it will feature Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, along with a pair of American speedsters – Fred Kerley and Erriyon Knighton.
The women’s 100-meter hurdles will feature multi-time Olympic medalists Cyrena Samba-Mayella of France and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.
The first night of competition in Lausanne will feature one event – men’s pole vault – which will include all three medalists from the 2024 Olympics – world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden, Sam Kendricks of the United States and Emmanouil Karalis of Greece.
