The Hampton football team will begin the 2024 campaign with a new leader, as running backs/special teams coach Trent Boykin was named interim head coach for the 2024 season.

The appointment came in April with the announcement of the departure of previous head coach Robert Prunty, who assumed the position in 2017.

Boykin has been coaching collegiately for nearly three decades, stopping at nine schools, before joining the Hampton coaching staff in 2020.

The Pirates were 5-6 overall in 2023, including a 3-5 mark in CAA play.

Hampton led the CAA in rushing yards per game last season with 216.4, paced by running back Elijah Burris, who averaged 100.4 yards across eight games. His average output was second behind Monmouth’s Jaden Shirden (134.4).

Now a senior, Burris recently was named to the preseason watchlist for the inaugural Urban Edge Network HBCU + FCS National Player of the Year Award, which will be announced Dec. 9.

Burris also was the lone Hampton player named to this year’s preseason All-CAA team.
