After an impressive Diamond League meeting in Oslo, there will be a quick turnaround to Stockholm just three days later on June 2. 

While many athletes will compete in both meets, some new headliners will lead the charge in Stockholm, including Femke Bol, Shericka Jackson, Stewart McSweyn and Mondo Duplantis.

Femke Bol To Make Season Debut in Women’s 400m Hurdles

We’ve seen Femke Bol tear it up in other distances in 2024, but this will be her first go at her speciality, the 400 meter hurdles. 

During her indoor campaign, Bol ended up winning the World Athletics Indoor Championship in the 400 meters, running an impressive personal best of 49.17. 

There, she showing marked improvement in her speed development. 

With her esteemed competitor in her marquee distance, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, announcing that she’ll be taking on the 400 meter hurdles again at the Paris Olympics -- and set to debut at the distance herself on Friday at the Edwin Moses Classic -- Bol has an excellent challenge to look forward to this summer. 

This opportunity will be a good rust-buster for Bol to see where she’s at, with a potential world lead to be established.

Bekele, McSweyn, Grijalva And Nordas Square Off In Men’s 3,000m

The type of 3,000 meter race that isn’t contested over water jumps or barriers is not a commonly run distance on the professional level, but when it is, it can be a great mix between athletes who run the 1,500 meters or 5,000 meters as their primary distances. 

Enter Stewart McSweyn: a guy who has been successful in running sub-3:30 in the 1,500 meters and sub-13:00 in the 5,000 meters. He produced his 12:56 personal best in Los Angeles earlier this month. 

His blend of speed and strength makes him a perfect candidate to succeed in this distance. 

Luis Grijalva is another guy who could mix up for the win in Stockholm, especially after running a personal best in Oslo over 5,000 meters, a time of 12:50 which came in a crazy stacked race. 

Telahaun Bekele, who owns the fastest time in the field, didn’t fare as well in Oslo, running 13:08 to finish 14th. This will be a good bounce back opportunity for him to perform on the level he’s capable of.

We’ve seen Narve Gilje Nordas run great in the middle-distances and especially at 1,500m, but he has run some good marks in the 3,000m/5,000m over his young career. His speed will be one to watch in the closing stages of this race. 

With this not being a distance at the Olympic Games/World Championships, we may have more of a tactical affair on our hands in Stockholm, but seeing any time in the neighborhood around or faster than 7:30 would be an impressive result for the winner.

Brittany Brown, Shericka Jackson And More Battle in Women’s 200m

Brittany Brown brought home a great win in the 200m, running 22.32 -- out of lane eight -- as she took down some great names in the process. 

She’s got some excellent momentum in 2024, and this win must have been a big confidence builder for her. 

She’s slated to run the 200m again in Stockholm, in which she’ll look to continue that hot streak going.

In another surprising result, Shericka Jackson finished fifth in Oslo, running 22.92. 

That performance is a little uncharacteristic for Jackson, but it’s early enough where we shouldn’t be that concerned. When she’s on, we know how dominant she can be. 

She’ll be running the 200m again in Stockholm, so this will give her another chance to find that rhythm again.

Star-Studded Men’s 800m Field Looks To Shine

The Stockholm Diamond League organizers assembled a top-tier field in the men’s 800m, looking to end the meeting with a bang.

With three men in this field already having run under 1:44, including the likes of Bryce Hoppel, Tshepiso Masalela, and Djamel Sedjati, we’ll be seeing sparks fly on the track. 

Of the nine-man field, all but two have run under 1:44 at some point in their careers. 

Taking a step down in distance, former 1,500 meter World Champion Jake Wightman will also be in this race. 

He’s already run 1:44.1 this season and can certainly get pulled along to a 1:43-mark with this talented group. He’ll certainly be a contender for the win here. 

Another name to point out is Benjamin Robert. He’s going to be making his season debut in the 800 meters here in Stockholm, to which he hasn’t recorded a result since March, when he was disqualified at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. 

He has one of the faster personal best times in the field, but we’ll have to see how he shakes off the rust in his opener. Might we see the first sub-1:43 race of the year? 

If the race gets out hot, it could happen.
